🫶 November 2023. Houston, Texas. A shootout in the street.

Officer Gibson was shot and went down.

The shooting was still active. Other officers were engaged. And in the middle of all of it, a motorist named John Lally pulled over.

John Lally is a former inmate. He has a record. By most conventional logic, pulling over during an active police shootout to help a wounded officer is the last thing someone with his background would do.

He pulled a wounded police officer to safety while bullets were still flying. He held Officer Gibson's hand. He stayed with him.

Gibson survived.

There are stories that cut through every assumption and every category we put people in. This is one of them.

John Lally, a man with a criminal history, saw a police officer dying in a Houston street and didn't hesitate to help him.

🌊 Blake Baxter went surfing near Encinitas, California, in April 2024. Routine morning. Water, waves, nothing out of the ordinary.

Then he was found floating face down.

Cardiac arrest in the ocean. By the time people reached him, he had no pulse.

His brother Guy and two passersby started CPR and didn't stop. Lifeguards eventually arrived, but the compressions had been going for more than 20 minutes without a pulse before Blake was revived.

Doctors said the continuous compressions preserved his brain function. Blake made a full mental and physical recovery.

Twenty-plus minutes of CPR with no pulse. A full recovery.

Guy Baxter was named the 2025 Red Cross Hero of the Year — not because he had special training, not because he was a medical professional, but because he refused to stop.

The hardest part of CPR isn't knowing how to do it. It's keeping going when you don't know if it's working. Most bystanders stop too soon, assuming the person is beyond help. Guy didn't stop. His brother is alive.
