Doesn’t sugar cause diabetes? Nope. ⬇️

When body mass index (BMI) is accounted for, sugar only increases diabetes risk via its potential to lead to weight gain via excess calories and has no unique diabetogenic effect at physiological levels. (PMID: 27707695)

Even obesity (high BMI) is not correlated with diabetes when toxins are taken into account (PMID: 27574488, PMCID: PMC4991654) and when it causes lipotoxicity. See below.

7 actual causes you rarely hear about:

1️⃣Mitochondrial Dysfunction: May be a central driver of diabetes by causing insulin resistance and reduced insulin secretion. (PMID: 15662004)

2️⃣Metabolic Endotoxemia: Gut-derived bacterial endotoxin in the bloodstream alters glucose metabolism due to its toxic and inflammatory effects on cellular and mitochondrial membranes and organs like the liver and pancreas. Diabetes also increases metabolic endotoxemia. (PMID: 28183445, PMID: 17456850, PMID: 21270197, PMID: 19794059)

3️⃣Toxins (“Diabetogens”): The influence of toxins on diabetes risk is so significant that it could potentially account for most of the diabetes epidemic. (PMID: 27574488, PMCID: PMC4991654)

4️⃣Thyroid Dysfunction: “Thyroid dysfunction and diabetes mellitus are closely linked.” (PMID: 30649221 PMCID: PMC6507635)

5️⃣Sleep Disturbances: “There is compelling evidence of an independent association of such sleep disturbances with the development, control, and progression of disorders affecting glucose metabolism such as type 2 diabetes …” (PMID: 30138125)

6️⃣Lipid Peroxidation: Damage to cell membranes by oxidative stress creates 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4-HNE), which induces insulin resistance. (PMID: 22396448)

7️⃣Lipotoxicity: Occurs when a person’s fat cells reach their limit for storing fat, become enlarged and inflamed, and release inflammatory cytokines and free fatty acids (FFA) into the bloodstream, which raises blood sugar, induces insulin resistance, and impairs insulin secretion in genetically predisposed individuals. (PMID: 16035392)

There are tests for all of this. Want to sort it out? DM me with CAUSES to see if I can help.

Whole story ⬇️

It had gotten to the point where she could barely move.

She was getting winded just getting out of bed, and she was worried that she was in danger of losing her independence.

Underneath it all, Chris felt that she had outlived her "expiration date" and was just waiting to die.

That’s when she came to me.

Within a few weeks of working together, her liver enzymes were down significantly, and after a few months she was back to the gym and working out.

Everything shifted when her body started receiving the targeted support that it needed.

I absolutely love helping people go from exhausted to energetic (and resolve other types of health challenges).

Most people's situations are not as extreme as what Chris was going through.

But if you (or someone you know) is dealing with fatigue (or brain fog), I have 3 Fix Your Fatigue and Brain Fog Breakthrough Sessions still available this week (including Saturday).

If you’d like support getting back to feeling like yourself again, send me a message with the word IN.

I’d love to see if I can help.

Causes of deficiencies that can cause low energy or fatigue 👇

B VITAMINS: diets high in carbs (B1) or protein (B1, B3, B6) or fats (B2) and/or low in whole foods including animal products and organ meats (all Bs), antacids (B1), gastric bypass (B1), high coffee or tea consumption (B1), high alcohol intake (B1, B2, B7), gut issues (B2, B6, B12), low adrenal and thyroid hormones (B2), genetic factors (B6, B7, B9), yeast overgrowth (B7)

IRON: diet low in animal foods, pregnancy, intestinal disorders, hypothyroidism

MAGNESIUM: diet low in plant foods and/or high in processed foods, diet high in fructose, chronic stress, high intake of alcohol, coffee, tea, or water, yeast overgrowth, high levels of oxalate, lead toxicity, suboptimal hydration, gut malabsorption, diabetes, ketosis, sweating.

VITAMIN D: diet low in fatty fish & pasture-raised egg yolks, low exposure to sunlight (including as a result of using sunscreens), inflammation (e.g. due to infection or injury or surgery), excess phosphorus, excess vitamin A, fat malabsorption

IODINE: foods grown in low-iodine soils, high intake of cruciferous vegetables or soy or flax seeds, low consumption of seafood, not using iodized salt or Himalayan salt, pregnancy, fluoride from water or toothpaste, bromine from flame retardants, dyes, insecticides, furniture foam, gasoline, electronics casings

OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS: diets low in fish, seafood, or fish oil supplements, genetic impairment in converting alpha linolenic acid (ALA) to EPA and DHA, diets high in vegetable / industrial seed oils (e.g. soy, canola, corn, safflower, all of which are in processed foods)

This is not a complete list of all causes of these deficiencies.

For testing nutrients, I like to use a combination of the Nutrient Zoomer and some individual blood markers like ferritin and biotin.

People are often surprised that they are deficient in nutrients they thought they were getting enough of.

And when they reverse important deficiencies, it usually helps restore energy. When it doesn’t, it means there is more going on than nutrient deficiencies.

Everyone’s chasing thyroid, adrenals, mitochondria, parasites, heavy metal detox, and the next biohacking gadget.

Meanwhile, one of the main causes of persistent fatigue nobody told you to look for is present in many homes.

You might even think you’ve already done a good job of looking for it (mold), but it often evades detection.

Here are three quick steps you can take, but there are many more steps to thoroughly check for exposure to mold.

First: Do an online visual contrast sensitivity test at VCStest(dot)com. This detects whether biotoxins such as mold toxins (mycotoxins) may be affecting your brain. It doesn’t detect 100% of biotoxin exposure, but it’s a good start and only costs $15.

Second: If you use a reverse osmosis filter to filter your water, check the membrane for mold. If there is mold, replace the membrane. Don’t just clean it. The mold will still be there and grow back.

Third: If you drink water from a refrigerator, check the refrigerator’s water filter for mold. If there’s mold in the filter, replace it.

And there are other steps to more completely test your body and environment (home, office, vehicles) for mold.

These were just three you can do right now, today.

But realize that a negative result on the visual part of the VCS test does not mean that you don't have exposure to mold or other sources of biotoxins.

It's just a good first pass to see what it might reveal.

Fatigue or brain fog? Here’s what to investigate first ⤵️

Usually, the gut, liver, and/or gallbladder are involved.

Sometimes the symptoms are not obvious, especially with gut issues.

That’s because gut inflammation is often “silent” (not creating symptoms in the gut).

And since gut issues usually drive problems in the liver and gallbladder, that’s the first thing to investigate.

A test like the PRO Gut Health test from Tiny Health uses “shotgun” sequencing to detect and quantify every organism in your stool sample.

Most other gut tests use 16S sequencing, which only detects the organisms it’s looking for.

Such tests include the GI-MAP from Diagnostic Solutions and the Gut Zoomer from Vibrant Wellness.

These are still excellent tests and have some advantages of their own for certain situations.

When it comes to assessing your liver and gallbladder, in addition to standard tests of liver enzymes, you can also measure things like bile acids to see if the liver is backed up.

But the most important thing to do is to assess the state of the gut.

🛟 Save this for reference, and stay tuned for Part 2 of “Hidden Causes of Fatigue or Brain Fog”.

My biggest mistakes 👇

I thought that I should be able to figure things out myself.

I thought there would be a single cause to fix.

I thought that it should be simple.

Like doing a Candida protocol.

Or eating a certain diet.

Or fasting.

But some of my DIY adventures made me far worse.

I eventually learned that the fastest and easiest path was to admit I didn’t know what I didn’t know and to work closely with somebody who had a good system.

I also learned that complete and permanent results come from addressing the multiple factors involved, not just one, and that it takes a good assessment process to start sorting things out.

Avoid my mistakes and:

1️⃣ Find somebody who has a holistic, detailed model of health, assessment process, and approach to addressing causes and contributors. Beware of people pitching a single solution.
2️⃣ Work with that person for more than 90 days if you’re making progress. Don’t “practitioner hop” every 90 days if you’re not completely healed. It often takes longer than that if you’ve had the issue for a while.
3️⃣ Resist any urges to rush the process. That almost always results in setbacks that cost you more time. Move at a pace your body can handle.

Some of this advice may seem self-serving on my part, but it’s the truth about the most important things I learned.

Here’s what happens when you approach it this way:

By working systematically, with somebody, patiently, you get there faster.

The tortoise wins the race, not the hare.

If you have brain fog ⬇️

You know how much it affects you.

Spacing out in conversations and trying to cover it, hoping the other person doesn’t notice.

Reading the same sentence or paragraph repeatedly because you can’t remember what you just read.

Struggling with even simple decisions while the bigger ones feel almost impossible to make.

Feeling like you can’t access your own intelligence, creativity, and potential any more.

This happened to me at one of the worst possible times … the beginning of my university education when things were starting to get real academically.

This went on for years and nearly controlled my life as I struggled to get through classes and homework at a top school.

Worse than that, the cause of the brain fog led to chronic fatigue that eventually sank me in a big way.

Then I turned it around and got my brain and my energy back.

So now it’s my mission to help people overcome this kind of thing and prevent things from getting worse.

Follow me if this is an issue for you that you want to resolve.

Brain fog has many causes like …

Chronically-activated stress response
Lack of key nutrients for your brain
Gut issues like SIBO or SIFO
Blood sugar instability
Low thyroid signaling
Lack of sleep
And others

And over time many of these causes can land you in an even worse situation, like what happened to me. The causes of my brain fog led to fatigue that eventually got so bad I could barely work.

Do what you can to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Gut inflammation is one of 4️⃣ main “fires in the basement” that can burn your “house” (body) down.

“Fires in the basement” are hidden problems your doctor typically doesn’t test for, but if ignored they will eventually burn your house (body) down.

Meanwhile, they are draining your energy, brain power, and general vitality.

1️⃣ Gut dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance), inflammation, or hyperpermeability (“leakiness”). Gut issues often cause the second type of fire in the basement …

2️⃣ Systemic inflammation. Systemic inflammation and gut issues (which are usually the cause of systemic inflammation) are among the main causes of liver disease, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia.

3️⃣ Toxicants like bisphenols, heavy metals, pesticides, and “forever chemicals” like perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that promote hormone imbalances, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, other types of neurodegeneration, and other disease processes.

4️⃣ Nutrient deficiencies, which impair processes like energy production, detoxification, and immune function (e.g. your body’s defense against cancer).

These fires in the basement are also “aging accelerators” that also interfere with anti-aging strategies like regenerative peptides.

If you’re serious about your health and longevity, here are the minimum initial steps:

✅ Test your gut to see if you have “silent” gut inflammation (PRO Gut Health by Tiny Health, GI-MAP by Diagnostic Solutions, and Gut Zoomer by Vibrant Wellness are tests I like).
✅ Fix your gut if necessary.
✅ Remove all other sources of systemic inflammation (may require more testing).
✅ Remove all major toxicants from your body (may or may not require testing with something like the Toxin Zoomer by Vibrant Wellness).
✅ Test your status of all important nutrients (e.g. Nutrient Zoomer by Vibrant Wellness)
✅ Resolve any nutrient deficiencies you may have.

Do as much of the testing as possible up front at the same time to build a complete picture of what is happening in your body.

Here's what I've learned about this ...👇
.. from my journey, from other practitioners, and from working with clients ...

These symptoms usually arise from 5 core contributors:

🚨Nervous system dysregulation

🍎Nutrient deficiencies

🪱Gut issues (including “silent” gut inflammation that does not create gut symptoms but creates symptoms in other parts of the body)

🦠Infections (chronic viruses, Lyme, other “stealth” infections, etc.)

☠️Toxic influences (chemicals, heavy metals, mold, foreign proteins, EMFs, etc.)

There are others, but those are 5 of the most common ones.

Another core contributor worth describing in more detail is a feeling of inadequacy that drives overwork, overtraining, overachieving to compensate for not feeling good enough, overuse of coffee to power through, abandoning or cutting corners on self care, and shortchanging sleep.

These core contributors give rise to secondary contributors like:

🥱Sleep issues

😞Adrenal and/or thyroid dysfunction (hidden by “normal” labs)

🥵Deficiencies and imbalances in the s*x hormones

😒Neurotransmitter imbalances and deficiencies

🫆Mitochondrial dysfunction

People often try to address one thing at a time, like gut issues or sleep.

But when they only address one thing, even if they experience some improvements, they usually relapse into symptoms again.

When multiple contributors are affecting symptoms, the body needs a full reboot, not a partial one.

All of the core contributors need to be addressed, some at the same time, and some in a coordinated sequence.

The best general sequence is:

1️⃣Assess what contributors are present.

2️⃣Reverse deficiencies (in nervous system “safety”, sleep, nutrients, voltage, etc.).

3️⃣Unblock the healing process (address mental and emotional factors, start healing the gut, open drainage and detox pathways, clear interference fields, etc.).

4️⃣Resolve other core contributors (gut dysbiosis, parasites, yeast overgrowth, toxic accumulation, etc.).

5️⃣Restore resilience (thymus gland regeneration, mitochondrial biogenesis, etc.).

This gets customized for each person.

If you suspect you might need a full reboot, follow on IG and FB me for more insights and tips.

And feel free to message me to chat about your situation.

When gut symptoms are hard to resolve, it usually means there are some hidden causes, some "upstream" factors, and perhaps some "obstacles to healing". The free document described in this video helps spot which of those factors might be present. And it helps identify what the best next steps might be to take.
