PCOS has a new name.
This past May, an international group of researchers, clinicians and patients formally renamed polycystic o***y syndrome. It is now PMOS β polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome.
The old name pointed at cysts. Those cysts are not always there, and they were never really the problem. What this condition actually affects is hormones and metabolism throughout the body β periods, blood sugar, cholesterol, skin, hair, fertility, mood. The new name finally says that out loud.
Nothing about how it is diagnosed or treated has changed. Your chart and your insurance will say PCOS for years yet.
But if you have ever been told your ovaries look "a little polycystic" and left the office without answers, this one is for you.
September is PCOS Awareness Month, and we will be posting about it all month.
