It's that time of year again! ✏️🍎

Axis Spine & Orthopedics is wishing all students and faculty a successful and joy-filled school year! Here are some back to school tips to ensure you are comfortable while learning, so you can stay focused this school year. One of the biggest issues we see is poor posture. This can lead to back pain, neck stiffness, and even long-term spinal issues. Luckily, with a few easy and simple adjustments students and educators can maintain a healthy back and spine throughout the school year. First, let’s talk backpacks. When hunting for the right backpack try to opt for one with padded straps and multiple compartments to distribute weight evenly. Make sure you’re not carrying half your weight in books, supplies, or electronics! Also, if you can, use lockers to minimize the amount of time you carry a heavy weight on your back. In the classroom, make sure you are also sitting up straight with your feet flat on the floor and if you are working on a computer or laptop, try to position the screen at eye level. It’s the little things that we forgot about that can really impact our spine health and posture. Lastly, staying active and stretching is always key. Finding that balance between schoolwork and activity can be really beneficial for students and their health. Axis Spine & Orthopedics hopes everyone has a successful and healthy school year!

When most people think about heart health, they often focus on eating well and exercising but many don't realize that spine health can also play an important role in maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle. Chronic neck or back pain can make it difficult to stay physically active, leading to more time spent sitting and less time exercising. The short answer to this is yes, but how? 80% of herniated discs heal without surgery and this can be done in a few ways. The first is by using targeted physical therapy movements and stretches to improve core stability and strengthen the supporting muscles to relieve pressure on the spine. We also use the Mckenzie Method to help assess and treat back pain from conditions like a herniated disc. This method emphasis postural correction and focuses on neck and back pain. If therapy doesn’t help, we also offer epidural injections as well at Axis Spine and Orthopedics.

It’s easy to confuse pain with a lot of other things, especially while in pain. Nerve pain is distinct from muscle or joint discomfort. Nerve pain usually consists of pains that feel like shocks, burning, radiating pain, and numbness. Nerve pain is generally more consistent and chronic as well and often radiates along a specific pathway. Here at Axis Spine and Orthopedics we can help pinpoint that pain and offer the best resources that will help you get back to doing what you love, pain free!
