๐ง What is PFAS and why does this EPA announcement matter?
The EPA has announced a plan to repeal existing federal drinking water limits on PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), known as "forever chemicals."
Set in 2024, these were the first federal drinking water standards of their kind in 25 years, establishing a limit of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS.
The current administration is now moving to undo those standards through a formal regulatory process.
๐ How widespread is the contamination?
More than 176 million Americans are served by water systems that have tested positive for PFAS, spanning 9,700+ known sites across all 50 states.
The National Academies of Sciences notes that almost 100% of the US population is exposed to at least one PFAS through:
๐ง drinking water
๐ฆ food packaging
๐ contaminated fish and ๐ฅdairy
๐จ dust ingestion
๐ง occupational exposure.
โ ๏ธ What does the science say?
The National Academies found sufficient evidence linking PFAS to decreased antibody response, cholesterol disruption, decreased fetal growth, and kidney cancer.
Suggestive evidence also exists for thyroid dysfunction, liver enzyme changes, pregnancy hypertension, and breast and testicular cancer. Children under 12 and pregnant people remain understudied populations.
๐ฌ With nearly every American already exposed to at least one PFAS, what are your thoughts on these proposed changes?
