Ten days before we left, Greta fell and sliced her nose cartilage top to bottom and had to have emergency surgery. I was thrown into a hyper vigilant state - constantly monitoring her every move and having visuals of her sutures opening.
Every night I would remind her how incredibly strong her body is and how her body knows exactly how to heal.
And then I packed us up, not sure if it was the “right” thing to do but knowing how hard we had worked to make this adventure possible. And as we settled into our spots on the airplane I smiled because I had everyone with me in one place.
It’s a trauma response - when we are tucked into a small space together, I know we’re safe.
Knowing my kids are safe and feeling safe in my body allows my nervous system to settle and creates pockets for my mind and breath to slow.
In a book I’ve come back to a handful of times, author Resmaa Menakem says “there’s a way out of this mess, and it requires each of us to begin with our own body.”
He talks about the importance of a settled body and how we need skills of nervous system regulation and ways to integrate our traumas.
A settled body might look like:
- learning to trust your body
- not bypassing or overriding your body’s genius (avoiding its experience)
- being able to stay present with feelings of discomfort + pain
- noticing sensations and body experiences
- the ability to harmonize and connect with other bodies around you, while encouraging those bodies to settle as well
How do we settle the body?
We practice - as much as we can. Rest. Sleep. Ask for help. Letting someone help you. Breathing slowly and fully when faced with intense discomfort and pain. Staying with it, instead of avoiding it or walking away.
None of these come easily to me. It’s something I continue to practice every single day. There are some seasons where I intentionally avoid them because I don’t have capacity and there are others (like now) where every day I’m hit with the feelings and I’m riding them like waves.
What I do know is that taking this trip, seeing dear friends and being with my fam jam in the place I met Jeff 18 years ago was epic and I’m so grateful we said yes👍🏼💛✨🫁
