As a therapist, I spend a lot of time talking with clients about stress, anxiety, and self-care. But recently, I realized I needed to take my own sleep more seriously. It wasn’t like in my younger years when I could bounce right back anymore!

I started wearing an Oura Ring, and it gave me something I wasn’t expecting: objective feedback about how my daily habits were affecting my sleep.
I learned that on nights when I stayed up late, I felt it the next day.

Sleep isn’t just about feeling rested.
Quality sleep helps:
• Regulate emotions
• Improve concentration and memory
• Reduce anxiety and irritability
• Support your immune system
• Give your brain the chance to recover from the day

You don’t need an Oura Ring to improve your sleep, but sometimes having data can help us notice patterns we might otherwise miss. The goal isn’t perfect sleep. It’s understanding your body well enough to make small changes that have a big impact!

August is National Wellness Month and I want to share something with you...

As a therapist, I remind others to prioritize their mental health. I need those reminders too.

Wellness isn’t about having it all together. It isn’t about checking everything off your to-do list or following the “perfect” morning routine. Some days, wellness simply means taking a deep breath before the next appointment, getting outside for a few minutes, asking for help, or giving yourself permission to rest.

This month, I hope you’ll give yourself the same compassion that you so freely give to others.

Throughout August, I’ll be sharing practical mental health tips, simple wellness strategies, and small habits that can make a meaningful difference. Wellness can be built with one small choice at a time.

Remember, you don’t have to wait until you are overwhelmed to take care of yourself. Do something every day.

What’s one thing you’re doing for your wellness this week? I’d love to hear in the comments.

Welcome, July!! ☀️

This month we’re focusing on something many of us struggle with: slowing down. Rest isn’t something you earn after you’ve done enough. It’s something your mind and body need to function well.

What would change if you gave yourself permission to pause?

DWC’s therapist, Angela, used some of her time to go on a hike with her dog. Hiking is a powerful way to regulate the nervous system to shift it out of a stress response. Here are some ways that hiking supports nervous system regulation:

☀️Activates the parasympathetic nervous system - this helps the body move away from “fight or flight” to “rest and digest” which lowers the heart rate and reduces muscle tension.
☀️Grounding through senses - Hiking naturally invites you to notice the sounds of birds, the feel of the breeze, the scent of pine trees, and the colors around you. By engaging the senses, it helps to bring attention back to the present moment.
☀️Rhythmic movement - Walking at a steady pace provides repetitive, bilateral movement that can calm the nervous system.
☀️Reduces stress hormones - Spending time in nature has been linked with lower cortisol levels and improved mood.
☀️Improves vagal tone - Deep, natural breathing that often occurs while walking outdoors may support vagus nerve function, which plays an important role in emotional regulation.
☀️Provides “soft fascination” - Natural environments gently hold our attention without demanding it, allowing the brain to recover from mental fatigue and overstimulation.
☀️Releases mood-boosting chemicals - Physical activity increases endorphins and can also support dopamine and serotonin pathways, which may improve mood and motivation.
☀️Builds resilience - Completing a trail reinforces the message: “I can do hard things.” This can increase confidence and help the nervous system learn that discomfort doesn’t always mean danger.

A hike isn’t just movement…it’s nervous system care!

Today, we honor Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the strength of Black communities.

As we reflect on this important day, we recognize that healing, dignity, and belonging are essential to well-being. May we continue to learn, listen, and work toward a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

“What do I love enough to protect?” 💛

I learned this question from positive psychologist, Maria Sirois, and it has helped me to know what I want to prioritize for the day. Then I ask myself what is a small thing that I can do today to make that happen.

Today, I am choosing to protect my peace. One small thing I am doing is to intentionally be present with nature.

What do you love enough to protect today?

I started going to therapy because I was in crisis from an eating disorder. After 30 years, I keep going because it is my support. It is my time to talk about all my “I can’t wait to talk this out with my therapist” thoughts. I am the most important thing in the room. It is all about me. I leave every session feeling like I was heard. I have direction. I feel better.

Everybody needs a therapist.

Our wonderful clinician, Angela, has immediate openings for you to start today.
