Some Sundays feel like a reset.

Not because everything magically got easier overnight… but because you finally get a moment to breathe and realize just how much you’ve made it through.

Life has a funny way of making us think we need to have everything figured out.

We don’t.

Sometimes the win is getting up.
Sometimes it’s starting over.
Sometimes it’s choosing to keep going when nobody else knows how hard that actually is.

And sometimes… you just need to laugh at the absolute chaos of life and say, “Well, we survived another week.” 😂

So before we head into a new week, tell me something:

What’s ONE thing you’re proud of yourself for this week?

Big or small. I want to hear it. ❤️

And if nobody has told you lately…

I’m proud of you for still being here.

Now let’s see what this next week brings. 🌱✨

Can We Talk About Handmade For A Minute? 🫶

I had a 2½ hour drive home today after dropping my son off with his stepmom, Zoey from Zo & Mos Creations, and apparently my brain decided that was the perfect time to think about small businesses. 😂

And y'all… something has been bothering me.

I keep seeing handmade and homemade things being called "too expensive."

And I genuinely want to understand something.

What are people expecting when they say they want handmade?

Because I think sometimes the expectation and the reality are two completely different things.

Take this little raccoon for example. 🦝

Zoey crocheted this BY HAND.

Not a machine.

Not a factory.

Not something she ordered 500 of and put her name on.

She bought the yarn.
She bought the stuffing.
She bought the little eyes.
She sat down and actually made the thing.

And every single stitch takes time.

That's not even getting into the fact that she had to KNOW HOW to make it in the first place.

And then there's the designing, the counting, the fixing mistakes, the starting over when something doesn't look right, the stuffing, the finishing touches…

And that's just one little raccoon.

Now multiply that across everything small businesses make.

Crochet.
Candles.
Soaps.
Jewelry.
Woodwork.
Paintings.
Sewing.
Baked goods.
T-shirts.
Pottery.
Farm products.
Decor.
Custom gifts.

Whatever it is.

There's a person behind it.

And I think that's the part we forget.

That person has a family too.

They have groceries to buy.

Bills to pay.

Kids to buy Christmas presents for.

A house to keep running.

They're trying to survive the same economy the rest of us are trying to survive.

And honestly?

A LOT of these people are already undercharging for what they're making.

That $40 crochet item might have taken several hours.

Then take out the yarn.

The stuffing.

The eyes.

The packaging.

The electricity.

The equipment.

The gas to get to a market.

The fees.

The taxes.

And suddenly that "expensive" handmade item doesn't sound quite so expensive.

I'm not saying everyone has to be able to afford handmade.

I can't afford everything I want either.

Sometimes I see something handmade and think, "Ohhh, I love that… but that's not in my budget right now."

And that's okay.

But there's a difference between:

"I can't afford that right now."

and

"That's ridiculous. I can buy something similar at Walmart for $10."

Yes.

You can.

Because Walmart is not handmade.

And that's okay too.

But if we're going to say we want to support small businesses, shop local, buy handmade, buy unique gifts and keep money in our communities…

we have to understand that handmade isn't supposed to compete with mass production on price.

You're not just buying the item.

You're buying someone's time.

Their skill.

Their creativity.

Their years of learning.

Their mistakes.

Their late nights.

Their supplies.

Their risk.

And you're helping a real person take care of their family.

So with Christmas coming up, I really want to hear from both sides.

If you shop handmade, what are you actually looking for?

Is it the uniqueness?

The quality?

Supporting a local person?

Knowing who made it?

The fact that it's something you can't just grab off a shelf?

And if you're a maker…

What is something you wish customers understood about the price of your work?

Because I really think this is a conversation worth having.

And Zoey, if you're reading this…

I'm sorry you gave me a 2½ hour drive home with nothing but my thoughts. 😂❤️

But this little raccoon got me thinking.

Let's talk about it.

😂🌱 HOMESTEADER CONFESSIONS:

You know you're officially a homesteader when...

You see a perfectly good glass jar and think:

“Ohhh, I can use that.”

You have 47 jars.

You keep them anyway.

You find a random bucket and immediately give it a purpose.

You see a plant growing somewhere and your first thought is:

“I wonder what that is.”

You go outside to water ONE plant...

…and somehow 45 minutes later you're holding a tomato, pulling weeds, checking on the chickens, moving something that doesn't need moving, and Googling whether the weird mushroom by the fence is edible. 😂

And don't even get me started on the produce.

You grew 6 zucchini.

You gave away 4.

You still have 17.

WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?! 😂😂

👇 Be honest:

What's your most ridiculous homesteader habit?

I'll go first:

I cannot throw away a container because “I might need it.”

At this point, I don't have storage.

I have an inventory system. 🤣

Share this with the person who has a garage full of “useful stuff.” 😂🌱

🌿 LET’S SUPPORT SOMETHING NEW IN OUR COMMUNITY! 🎨🖤

I love seeing new local businesses bring something different to Shreveport, and VNDL Art Collective is doing just that.

They’re opening a new tattoo shop + art gallery in Downtown Shreveport, creating a space where tattoo artistry and visual art can come together under one roof. 🖤

There’s something special about people taking a chance on their creativity and investing in our community. New businesses don't just need customers—they need people willing to share, encourage, recommend, and help spread the word.

So if you're local to Shreveport, go give VNDL Art Collective a follow, check out their work, and keep an eye on their opening. 👀

And if you’re an artist, tattoo enthusiast, or just someone who loves seeing our downtown grow, this is one to watch.

Drop a 🖤 if you’re excited to see new creative spaces coming to Downtown Shreveport!
