Because sometimes you are doing the skills and expecting the the feelings to disappear..
You journaled.
You took deep breaths.
You went for a walk.
You distracted yourself.
And somehow... you're still upset.
That doesn't mean the coping skill failed.
Sometimes the goal isn’t: "What make me feel better.”
It’s: "Help me not make this situation worse.”
And sometimes you’re using a calming skill for an emotion that needs to be felt. You don't always need to calm down. Sometimes you need to cry, vent, move your body, set a boundary, or actually deal with the problem.
and sometimes, you’re at a 10/10 trying to use a skill you've never practiced at a 3/10.
The right coping skill isn’t the one that makes you instantly feel okay. It's the one that helps you get through the moment without abandoning yourself.
