Today, we were honored to host Guest Presenter, Dr. Kathleen Crapanzano, as visiting professor for our Grand Rounds! 💜

Dr. Crapanzano’s presentation titled “Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, and Mental Health” covered a wealth of information from sleep diagnostic criteria and screening as a part of a differential diagnosis, to current research.

Kathleen Crapanzano, MD is the George A. Bishop Professor of Psychiatry with the LSU School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry in New Orleans, serves as the Section Chair for the Baton Rouge regional campus and was the founding program director for the LSU BR Psychiatry residency. After completing her training at the Medical College of Georgia, she returned to Baton Rouge and worked on the faculty of the LSU-BR Internal Medicine program. She served as the Medical Director for the Louisiana Office of Mental Health in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, helping to rebuild and expand the mental health system across the state at that time. Her research interests are in the area of stigma and bias and its effects on clinical decision making in the mentally ill.

Every breakthrough begins with a question.

Today, Dr. Donard Dwyer, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, spoke with KTAL Channel 6 reporter Mya Alysia about his teams’ groundbreaking research on su***de risk genes. His work is based on one of the largest behavioral studies of its kind and suggests that su***de risk genes may be tied to ancient biological systems involved in motivation, threat detection, anxiety, and survival.

Our hope is that this research could one day help shape su***de prevention.

You are loved. 💜💛💜 And, for that reason, we invited Guest Presenter, Raymond Tucker, PhD to give today’s much anticipated Grand Rounds, “What Suicidal Thoughts Are and Are Not.”

This topic is more important than ever as the CDC reports more than 14 million adults experience thoughts of su***de every year in the U.S. Dr. Tucker compassionately discussed best practices of su***de screening and reviewed standardized tools in su***de ideation assessment. He also explored what suicidal thoughts are and what they are not, such as not contingent on depression symptoms, strong predictors of suicidal behaviors, or always triggered by negative life events. So many insights shared in today’s presentation. Thank you, Dr. Tucker for sharing your incredible work and for your time in teaching us today. 💜💛💜

Raymond P. Tucker, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist and associate professor of psychology at Louisiana State University and founded the LSU Mitigation of Suicidal Behavior research laboratory. As a clinical assistant professor of psychology at LSUHSC, he trains medical staff/students in su***de-specific evidence-based assessment and intervention protocols. 
Dr. Tucker has over 160 peer-reviewed academic publications regarding su***de risk and resilience and has helped secure over seven million dollars of grant funding from regional and national funders, including the Department of Defense (DoD), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). In 2020, he was named American Association of Suicidology’s Citizen Scientist for the role he has played in training his local community and LSU’s Rising Faculty Research Award for his contributions to academic psychology. In 2023 he was named the Edwin Shneidman early career professional of the year by the American Association of Suicidology and 2026 he was awarded the Contributions to Psychological Science Award from the Louisiana Psychological Association.

It was another Fabulous Friday in Psychiatry! Today’s Grand Rounds was presented by guest presenter, Sydney Melancon, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and Consult Liaison Psychiatry Program Director at LSU Health New Orleans!

Dr. Melancon’s presentation titled, “Complexities of Bipolar Treatment Management in Women of Childbearing Age discussed complex decision making at each stage of life for women of childbearing age with bipolar disorder; and, identified areas for further research to support treatment recommendations during special circumstances such as assisted reproductive health.

Dr. Melancon is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry with the LSUHSC School of Medicine in New Orleans and serves as the Residency Program Director. She is a graduate of the LSU Psychiatry Residency Program in Baton Rouge and completed a Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry fellowship in New Orleans. She is board certified in adult psychiatry and consultation liaison psychiatry.
