📚 Learning Journal Series: Activity #1 – Crazy Hair Tracing! ✂️💇

If you have a little one that needs to be entertained while you do homework or study with your bigger kids, this mini-series is for you!!

You don’t need expensive materials to build important preschool skills!

Here, we’re making crazy hair by tracing different lines (straight, zig-zag, wavy, curved, and loops) from the top of a head.

This simple activity helps your child develop:
✨ Fine motor skills
✨ Pencil control
✨ Hand-eye coordination
✨ Pre-writing skills needed for letters

Make it extra fun by letting them decorate the silly face afterward!

One page at a time, you’re creating a learning journal your child can come back to again and again. ❤️

My trunk stays stocked because childhood doesn’t need a reservation. ❤️

A kickball, cones, chalk, bubbles, books, a bucket, toys, and a few random treasures… because you never know when you’ll find the perfect field, park, church yard, or patch of grass to make a memory.

Some of our best moments happen when we simply pull over, open the trunk, and play.

Kids don’t need expensive entertainment. They need fresh air, open space, and adults willing to say, “Let’s play.”

I’m incredibly honored to have received my 6th ASHA ACE Award! 🎉

This award recognizes continuing education and a commitment to lifelong learning, and it’s something I never take for granted.

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I believe the more I learn, the better I can serve the children and families who trust me. Every course, conference, book, and training helps me bring more evidence-based strategies, fresh ideas, and confidence into my therapy sessions.

I also know what it’s like to sit across from parents who are worried, overwhelmed, or wondering if their child will ever catch up. I never want families to feel like they’re walking that journey alone. My goal is to listen well, encourage often, and provide the tools and support they need—because behind every goal we work on is a child with incredible potential and a family who loves them deeply.

Thank you to every family who has trusted me to be part of your child’s story. It is truly an honor, and I promise to keep learning, growing, and striving to give each child my very best.

Here’s to never stopping the pursuit of knowledge—for the kids who deserve it. ❤️📚

Have you discovered the Merlin Bird ID app yet? 🐦

One of the easiest ways to spark curiosity and language development is simply by stepping outside. The Merlin Bird ID app lets you identify birds by their songs, calls, or a quick photo—and it’s completely free!

Why I love it:
🌿 Encourages children to slow down and observe their surroundings.
🗣️ Builds vocabulary as you learn the names of different birds.
👂 Strengthens listening skills by comparing bird sounds.
❓ Promotes critical thinking through predicting, observing, and identifying.
🚶 Turns an ordinary walk into an exciting nature scavenger hunt.

Whether you’re looking for a screen-time alternative or just want to make an afternoon outside more meaningful, this is a wonderful way to learn together.

Sometimes the best learning doesn’t happen at a desk—it happens outside, looking up. ❤️

☁️ Sometimes the best entertainment is simply looking out the window. ☁️

As we drove, my boys spent time looking up at the clouds, pointing out shapes, asking questions, and letting their imaginations run wild.

It reminded me of something important…

Kids don’t have to be entertained every minute of every car ride.

Boredom isn’t the enemy—it’s often where creativity, language, and problem-solving begin.

Instead of reaching for a screen, encourage them to:
☁️ Look for pictures in the clouds.
🚜 Count tractors, cows, or birds.
🌳 Talk about what they see.
💭 Make up silly stories together.
❓Ask “I wonder…” questions.

These simple moments build vocabulary, strengthen attention, encourage conversation, and spark imagination—all without a single battery.

As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I love reminding families that some of the richest language opportunities happen in everyday moments. The car ride doesn’t have to be filled with noise. Sometimes all a child needs is a window, a big sky, and the freedom to wonder.

What have your kids spotted in the clouds lately? ☁️💙

Learning through pretend play is one of the best ways to build real-life skills! 🛒💵

Our cash register activity was so much more than “playing store.” This hands-on activity targeted important skills like:

✨ Executive functioning (planning, organizing, and problem-solving)
✨ Turn-taking and social communication
✨ Following multi-step directions
✨ Counting and number skills
✨ Money concepts and making exchanges
✨ Vocabulary development
✨ Attention and flexible thinking

Pretend play gives children the opportunity to practice everyday skills in a fun, low-pressure way. Whether they’re the cashier, the customer, or the “store manager,” they’re building confidence and independence! 💙

Name recognition is one of the first steps toward early literacy! 💙✨

Here, we worked on visually identifying a child’s name — helping them learn to recognize what their name looks like before they are able to write it.

Through fun, hands-on activities, we can build:
🔤 Letter recognition
👀 Visual attention and discrimination
✋ Matching skills
🧠 Memory and recall
📚 Early reading and writing foundations

A child’s name is meaningful, motivating, and often the first “word” they learn to recognize. When learning is connected to something personal, kids are more engaged and ready to grow!

A little creativity turns therapy into play! ☁️✨

We put contact paper backwards on the wall (sticky side facing out) and used a bowl of cotton balls to toss and stick!

This simple activity was a fun way to increase repetitions and engagement while working on important skills:

☁️ Hand-eye coordination
☁️ Fine motor strength
☁️ Visual attention
☁️ Motor planning
☁️ Following directions
☁️ Increased practice trials for targeted speech and language goals

The best learning happens when kids are having fun! 💙
