Subject: Autism Awareness Day – With Gratitude and Purpose
Dear Total Programs Staff and Families,
Today, on Autism Awareness Day, I want to take a moment to reflect on something deeply meaningful to all of us.
It is truly an honor to be invited into the lives of the individuals and families we serve. The children, adolescents, and adults we support—each with their own unique strengths, personalities, and challenges—are not only important to our work, they are at the very heart of why we do what we do.
Even in moments when behaviors are difficult or hard to understand, we must always remember that these are expressions of confusion, frustration, or unmet needs. They are not burdens—they are opportunities for us to better understand, to support, and to connect. And in doing so, we grow as professionals and as people.
After more than 40 years of working with individuals with autism, I can say without hesitation that this work has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. There is an entire generation of incredible individuals with autism—each one different, each one valuable, each one deserving of dignity, respect, and meaningful inclusion in our communities.
As we go out into the world each day, it is our responsibility to help others see what we see—that these individuals are not defined by their challenges, but by their humanity, their potential, and their contributions. They are, without question, wonderful assets to our community.
Thank you to our staff for your compassion, patience, and dedication. Thank you to our families for your trust. And most importantly, to the individuals we serve—it is a privilege to walk alongside you.
Wishing all of you a meaningful Autism Awareness Day.
With respect and care,
Dr. Sean
