Struggling with sciatica? The Center for Brain & Spine is a leading provider of surgical treatment of sciatica.

Sciatica describes a pattern of pain, weakness, numbness, or tingling that starts in the buttocks and radiates down a leg. It is generally caused by injury to the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is often caused by herniated discs, muscle injuries, pelvic fractures, or tumors.

Treatment is based on the severity of symptoms and underlying cause. For some patients, no treatment is necessary. For others, conservative therapies such as heat or ice, pain medications, steroid injections, or physical therapy may be recommended. If these options do not provide satisfactory relief, you may need to explore surgical treatment options for the underlying cause of your sciatica.

If you develop carpal tunnel syndrome — a pinched nerve in the forearm that causes numbness or tingling in the thumb and certain fingers — your doctor might recommend one of two treatments. One is a steroid injection that reduces swelling and pressure on the nerve. The other is surgery that permanently removes pressure on the nerve. Which treatment is best to start with? Probably surgery, according to a randomized trial published June 14, 2025, in The Lancet.

The Center for Brain & Spine is a leading provider of carpal tunnel release surgery. To schedule a consultation, please call (301) 585-7900.

In patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, initiating treatment with surgery offers a higher chance of recovery after 18 months compared with starting with a corticosteroid injection, even with the possibility of additional interventions.

Dr. Amini is one of the area's most experienced robotic-assisted neurosurgeons. A recent study demonstrated that robot-assisted surgery offers significant advantages in terms of both short-term postoperative recovery and long-term functional improvement and pain relief. It outperformed conventional free-hand surgery in reducing complication rates, accelerating postoperative recovery, lowering reoperation rates, and promoting fracture healing and spinal alignment recovery.

BackgroundRobot-assisted surgery has been increasingly applied in spinal surgery in recent years, but the differences in efficacy compared to conventional fr...
