Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation visited the McLean Health Center today, bringing some of the birds of prey in their care. McLean celebrated the Longest Day – the day set aside by the Alzheimer’s Association to recognize and honor those living with dementia and their caregivers – with an old-fashioned ice cream truck in our Butterfly Garden. Our residents, their families, and our staff members enjoyed a sweet treat on a sunny afternoon!

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, a time to increase public awareness about early detection, brain health, and the impact of Alzheimer’s.

McLean was the first community to be awarded the Purple Flag designation for excellence in dementia care; the program has since expanded to be a nation-wide measure of care. McLean’s Vice President of Community Life Carlene Rhea explains how McLean came to earn the first Purple Flag.

Last night, on a perfect New England evening, we broke ground on the new McLean Game Refuge Headquarters building. McLean forest rangers past and present, our generous donors and trustees, and McLean leaders gathered as Game Refuge Director Connor Hogan and McLean President Lisa Clark struck the first shovels into the ground. Connor and Lisa were ably assisted by some young helpers – who took their roles very seriously, and kept on digging!

Do you have a File of Life?

At the Simsbury Public Library last week, McLean Hospice – along with representatives from the Town of Simsbury, the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance Association, and Carmon Funeral Homes – shared valuable information about what to expect after 911 has been contacted. We talked about how important a “File of Life” can be when every minute counts – it’s a way to ensure that your wishes regarding life-saving measures are respected.

Thank you to the Simsbury Public Library and Simsbury Community & Social Services for sponsoring this event, and to the Simsbury-Granby Rotary for providing a “File of Life” for each participant to record vital emergency information. June is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s affects many more than the person diagnosed: It touches all members of the family and the community. Join us at McLean on June 23 for a special event to learn more about Alzheimer’s and dementia’s impact on the individual, the family, and society – as well as how people can live a full and meaningful life after diagnosis. The CT Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will be here for this panel discussion.

Earlier this week, the weather was perfect so we took our Chair Yoga class out to the courtyard! (Today it's a little too hot for that, so we're yoga-ing inside.) Hoping for slightly cooler temps next week, so we can head out to the courtyard again.
