Nothing about it seemed like a problem. It looked like the comfort of a long marriage. For a year, whenever Brian asked how they were managing, the answer was always some version of the same thing: they had each other. He believed it, because it was true, and because it felt easier to believe. But at dinner, he realized that "they" had quietly become just his father, and that was what really mattered now.
