Megan stood with a bakery box, feeling the mood shift. Her mother was dressed, but not fully put together. A dish towel hung over a chair, something on the stove had overcooked, and the dog barked from the back room. Her mother didn’t move aside immediately. The visit landed in the middle of something she hadn’t planned for them to see, catching everyone off guard.
