It’s late in the week but we are here saying hello to the ENT guys upstairs on the 2nd floor! Dr. David Wagner, MD & Dwight Birkley, PA.
Dr. Wagner has been with Pierce Street since it opened in 2002! He says he wouldn’t trade his career for anything!
He was born & raised in Sioux City, IA. After high school he spent 14 years training in Seattle, Kansas City, & Iowa City before returning to live in Sioux City.
He says if he could travel anywhere he would go to Kampen, Netherlands & Luxembourg to see where his ancestors lived before coming to the U.S.
When he is not at work he enjoys spending time at the lake with his wife, Ashley, & sons, Bradley & Brandon. He enjoys sailboat racing, boating, golf, pheasant hunting, Hawkeye football at Kinnick Stadium, watching NFL football (Go Chiefs!), strength training, & time with his two Lewellen setters & yellow lab.
Fun Facts:
1. “I examined Ozzy Osbourne’s vocal cords before his concert at the Tyson Event Center.”
2.”My maternal grandmother’s family lineage-Delamater traces back to the founding of New Amsterdam before it was New York.”
3.”My grandfather, Dr. James A. Wagner, was a country doctor & practiced in Primghar, IA between 1915 & 1955.
“Growing up & over my endless training years, there were several teachers, professors, mentors, fellow students I admired & helped me along the journey. I owe a great deal to all of them. The mentionable-figures that had a big impact in my life were my father, Dr. Richard G. Wagner, Dr. Don Heistad, Dr. Larry Hoover, & Dr. Henry Hoffman. By my sophomore year of college I knew I wanted to go to medical school.”
What do you have to say about your practice?
“The things I’d want to say about my practice; I’ve been very blessed with loyal staff, the greatest physician assistant ever, Dwight Birkley, he has been my “Wing Man” for the past 25 years! (Thanks DB!) All of the tools & excellent facilities I need to practice my trade & many grateful patients, especially my cancer survivors & their families & I consider it a great privilege & still enjoy working as an ear, nose, & throat surgeon/specialist.”

With Dr. Wagner is his “Wing Man” Dwight Birkley, Physician Assistant! Dwight has been with Pierce Street the same as Dr. Wagner! He joined the team the same time.
Dwight’s fun fact is that he is retiring December 31, 2026! We are sad & excited for him all at the same time & we know he will be difficult to replace!
What you might not know about Dwight is that he has been on 10 medical mission trips to Haiti/Dominican Republic! He is a caring man that is always giving back to the community! 🥰 Dwight grew up in Newcastle, NE & when asked who he wanted to be like when he was growing up, he said his dad. His dad was a farmer.
Dwight’s education-went to St. Luke’s for his RN, Briar Cliff for his BSN, USD for MS in Healthcare Administration, & University of North Dakota for his Physician Assistant.
