Born prematurely with gastroschisis and living with short bowel syndrome, Aveanna patient Levi requires specialized, attentive care—something Nurse Shannon and the rest of his Aveanna team are honored to provide.

Now that he's home with his parents, Nurse Shannon helps monitor Levi’s G-button and central line during feedings, ensuring he stays safe and healthy as he begins this exciting new chapter. She’s also there to support and educate his parents as they adjust to life at home as a family of three.

“Parenting a special needs child grounds you and puts what really matters into focus. My bond with Rosetta might look different from other fathers and daughters. But she’s taught me that love prevails no matter what we face.”

Over the last two decades, Steve and his wife have navigated the ups and downs of parenthood with their four children, two of whom live with special needs. Their youngest daughter, Rosetta, has shown Steve the depth of a parent’s love through every obstacle.

Rosetta lives with SCO1, an ultra-rare genetic condition that affects energy production and physical development. This rare disorder presents challenges with seizures and breathing, requiring 24/7 care and ongoing medical support. Rosetta and her family rely on private duty nursing services for stability, comfort, and peace of mind. Thanks to their Aveanna nurses, Steve can focus on what matters most: being Rosetta’s dad.

Hadlee joined the Aveanna family back in December of 2016. Her care was complex from the beginning. She was born at just 23 weeks with spina bifida. When she came home, she relied on a trach, ventilator, and G-tube.

After nearly a decade of care with Aveanna, Hadlee is 10 years old, independent, and thriving! Recently, she celebrated her graduation from Aveanna services, and her care team team was there to ring in her special milestone. The progress she’s made shows what strong care coordination, consistency, and dedication can lead to over time.

In her next chapter, Hadlee will be busy being a kid! She loves watching Disney movies, playing baseball, and working out with her mom. We cannot wait to see all the fun things she’ll experience. Thank you for letting us be part of your journey over the years!

Today, Aveanna recognizes Batten Disease Awareness Day. This annual observance honors the children and families impacted by the disorder and advocates for further research.

Batten disease is a rare, fatal genetic disorder that affects the brain and nervous system, leading to neurological and mobility challenges over time. The disease affects approximately 14,000 children worldwide. Currently, there is no cure, although recent therapies have appeared to slow progression of the disease.
