In all seriousness, pelvic floor internal exams can be so informative for our patients. We know how intimate and intimidating it can be and do our best to ease your worries…no matter what Dr. Sara is up to on the other side of the door 😉

Just like the rest of your body, the often-forgotten-about pelvic floor has her own job description. She is responsible for:
1) Organ Support
2) Sphincter Control
3) Sexual Function
4) Stability
5) Sump Pump Action (the second diaphragm of the body, IF she is coordinating properly)

Needless to say she has a hefty job description but just like the rest of your body, she was made for this! Which part of your pelvic floor's job description feels "off" or "on vacation"?

One could argue that the intrusive thoughts I have throughout my day are all pelvic floor related. Occasionally, however, these beautiful 90s moments come rushing back and fill my nostalgic cup. 🐭 Please tell me I’m not alone here???

It doesn't wait until delivery day to start preparing.
Your pelvic floor has been studying for months.
Every breath you take, every posture you hold, every time your baby grows a little more...it’s adapting. It's learning flexibility, coordination, endurance, and how to manage increasing pressure.
Think of birth as the final stretch of the marathon you have been on for 9 months
You can't train the night before, but you can help your body prepare.
✨ Practice diaphragmatic breathing.
✨ Learn to relax your pelvic floor...not just strengthen it.
✨ Build awareness of your posture and pressure management.
✨ Connect with your core before your baby arrives.
Preparation isn't about having the "perfect" birth.
It's about giving your body the tools it needs to respond, recover, and heal.
Postpartum healing doesn't begin after birth...it begins with the habits you build during pregnancy.
Knowledge is power. Preparation is confidence. And your body deserves both. 💙

Supporting your body through your third trimester is crucial to your well-being and making it down the final stretch of pregnancy. Have you ever given these tips a try?

I get it… Kegels are the only pelvic floor exercise most people have ever heard of. So it makes sense that “do your Kegels” became the go-to advice for pregnancy.
But here’s the thing: labor isn’t about squeezing. It’s about releasing and relaxing.
Your pelvic floor needs to be able to fully lengthen (move the hell out of the way) and open to let your baby move through the birth canal. If all you’ve trained is the “squeeze and hold,” you haven’t trained the skill you actually need on delivery day.
What I focus on with patients instead:
🔹 Pelvic floor relaxation & lengthening — learning to drop and release on command, not just contract with better breathing techniques than counting to 10
🔹 Breath work that connects to pelvic floor movement — so your body knows how to open under pressure
🔹 Perineal massage starting around 34-36 weeks to improve tissue flexibility
🔹 Pushing mechanics — practicing how to “bear down” effectively without holding tension…we gotta move beyond the cue of push as if you are trying to poop
🔹 Body positioning — knowing which positions help vs. hinder descent (hip position matter and stirrups aren’t the answer)
None of this is about being “strong.” It’s about your body knowing how to let go when it matters most.
If no one has walked you through this before your due date, that’s a gap worth closing …at Prosper PT we can help you feel prepared instead of guessing.
📍 Save this for your third trimester
❓ What’s one thing you were told during labor/delivery that you questioned after the fact?

Not every pelvic floor signal is obvious.
- A little leak when you laugh.
- That 'I have to go NOW' feeling.
- Pelvic heaviness after a busy day.
- A core that never feels fully engaged.
- Lower back tension that keeps returning.
These aren't your body working against you.
They're gentle signals that it may be asking for more support.
