South Dakota Safety Council To make South Dakota a safer and healthier place to live,
work, and play

Since 1949 the South Dakota Safety Council has partnered
with our members to protect their people and their bottom line. Our mission is very straightforward,
β€œTo make South Dakota a safer and healthier place to live,
work, and play”. The bottom line is for our members to call or e-mail us when
they are working with safety goals. Often times we can save them time and/or money with
existing program templates, resources, or training.

🏍️ WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES! 🏍️

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally means more motorcycles on our roads. Whether you’re heading to the Rally, commuting to work, or traveling through the area, please take an extra moment to LOOK TWICE and SAVE A LIFE.

πŸ‘€ Check mirrors and blind spots
↔️ Give motorcycles plenty of space
🚦 Look twice before turning or changing lanes
πŸ“΅ Put the phone down and stay focused
🏍️ Remember: motorcycles can be closer than they appear

Share the road. Stay alert. Help everyone get home safely.

Celebrate the Fourth of July safely!
πŸš—πŸ€πŸš™
Whether you're traveling across town or across the state, expect heavier traffic and plan ahead. Check road conditions before you leave, give yourself extra time and make sure your vehicle is road-trip ready.
Gathering with friends and family? 🌟 If alcohol or other impairing substances are part of your plans, choose a sober ride home. A designated driver, rideshare or staying the night could save a life.
When you're behind the wheel:
βœ… Buckle up
βœ… Put the phone away
βœ… Slow down
βœ… Watch for motorcycles, road crews and emergency responders
βœ… Move over for stopped vehicles when it's safe to do so
When you're driving, your only job is to drive. This Independence Day, celebrate the freedom to make safe choices for yourself, your passengers and everyone sharing the road.

Thank you, Keloland Living, for having us on yesterday to share the importance of pedestrian safety! And special thanks to Rob Weinmeister, Director of the Office of Highway, for their ongoing support, which allows us to continue educating the community on safer roadway habits.

Pedestrians:
Look up.
Make eye contact.
Use the crosswalk.
Be seen.

Drivers:
Slow down.
Stay off the phone.
Be aware.

Remember: Whether you are behind the wheel or on your feet, pedestrian safety starts with you!

From busy intersections to neighborhood sidewalks and even rural roads, one small moment of distraction can have big consequences.

Roxanna McKenna is the Community Education and Development Manager with the South Dakota Safety Council; and Robert Weinmeister is the Director of the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety & Accident Records.

They were here today to talk with us about how both drivers and pedestrians can stay alert, follow the rules, and look out for one another, so that everyone gets where they’re going safely.
