It's official- the effective dates for the new background check process are below:

Biometric Background date of implemention for all licensed EMS clinicians

New licenses: 1 April 2027
Relicensure: 30 September 2027 (in time for for the EMT-1 relicensure cycle)
Agencies may apply to the NABCS as a "registered provider" at any point and may also begin this process for licensees prior to the date of implementation

EMS Week is a time to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary people who answer the call in our communities every single day.

Across Southeast Alaska and beyond, EMS professionals, volunteers, dispatchers, firefighters, first responders, nurses, physicians, pilots, educators, and support teams work together to provide care in some of the most challenging and remote environments imaginable. From roadside emergencies and marine responses to village clinics, critical care transports, and community outreach, EMS is far more than a profession — it is a commitment to service, teamwork, and compassion.

This week, we honor the dedication, sacrifice, and resilience of those who stand ready at all hours to help others on their worst days. We also recognize the families, agencies, hospitals, and partners who support this work behind the scenes and help strengthen the continuum of care throughout Alaska.

State Farm Good Neighbor Flyer-2026.pdf

Hello!
I'm on the way back from State Code Blue Steering Committee and Regional Directors meetings with good news: we did it! After hearing from rural EMS advocates statewide, both the State House and Senate added Code Blue funding into their version of the capital budget! Thank you for your advocacy and support!

What this means for you
- Very few applications were received statewide, presumably because Code Blue was still unfunded when applications were due. Because of this, the CBSC requested an extension of the application deadline extension to June 30. We have not yet received a response but are hopeful. If you didn't put your request in because of the lack of funding, please apply now! Its not certain but the odds are good!
- If you did apply: all existing applications are in progress and all eligible items are on the list for tentative funding. Again, no promises, but this is promising!
- More advocacy will likely be needed to ensure Code Blue remains in the finalized budget signed by the governor- look for more info shortly on our next steps!

-Small community grants due tomorrow morning: Here is another excellent and under-utilized grant. By applying, you can boost funding for your own and neighboring communities. Sorry for the short notice- Get it in tomorrow by 0800 Alaska time!

Hi all,

In cooperation with the NVFC, we’d appreciate your help promoting the 2026 State Farm® Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program, which will provide 150 VFDs across the U.S. with $10,000 to purchase critical equipment. States with 10 or more applicants are guaranteed at least one grant recipient. Last year, Alaska only had 7 eligible applications. It’d be great if we could get more participation.

If you could please share this information with your regions, that would be helpful.

The application is open May 4-7 (noon ET); encouraging departments to prepare now is key. The first 2,000 eligible applicants will also receive a complimentary one-year NVFC membership.
