Sitka Counseling

Sitka Counseling Our primary purpose is to prevent and reduce the harmful effects of mental illness and substance use in the lives of youth, adults, and families.

We do this by providing caring, professional, therapeutic, and preventative services. Sitka Counseling prevents and reduces the harmful effects of mental illness and substance abuse in the lives of youth, adults, and families. We provide caring, professional, therapeutic, and preventative services. We are a 501c3 non-profit corporation.

We serve the geographical area encompassing Sitka, Baranof

Island, and Yakutat. We also accept referrals from across the State of Alaska for the adult residential program, Aurora’s Watch.

Behavioral health issues affect citizens in all socio-economic and racial backgrounds, but tend to produce more devastating effects in the lives of individuals on the lower socio-economic end of the spectrum and in the racial minority. Historically, the majority of our service population consists of low-income and/or minority residents who encounter significant barriers to treatment.

We don’t claim any religious affiliation. We serve those of all faiths, as well as agnostics. We endeavor to promote a spiritual component in recovery of the individual’s own choosing and encourage each individual to explore their own spiritual beliefs as a part of our holistic approach to treatment and recovery.

Myth: Naloxone encourages people to use drugs.

Fact: Studies show carrying naloxone saves lives and does not encourage drug use.

Boys Run I Toowú Klatseen 5K Fun Run! 🏃‍♂️🦖

Held on May 9th, this dinosaur-themed community event brought together runners, families, and supporters to celebrate movement, encouragement, and youth achievement. A big thank you to the Boys Run I Toowú Klatseen program and Pathways to a Safer Sitka for organizing and leading such a meaningful event for the community.

From registration to the finish line, the energy, support, and community spirit were truly inspiring. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day a success!

Gunalchéesh to Aaron Surma and Margaret Katzeek of NAMI Juneau, Anna Schumacher of Sitka Tribe of Alaska, and all who attended the Together We Are Strong - Su***de Prevention Training. Throughout the training, we learned more about su***de prevention, the importance of checking in with ourselves and one another, and how meaningful it is to ensure people feel heard, respected, and valued.

We appreciated everyone who attended and shared thoughtful insights, compassion, and kindness throughout the training. The conversations, connection, and willingness to support one another made this experience truly impactful for our community.

Homicide is roughly the third leading cause of death among Indigenous women ages 10-24.
56.1% have experienced sexual violence, 55.5% have experienced physical violence by an intimate partner, and 48.8% have experienced stalking.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that there were 10,248 missing Indigenous persons reports in 2024. 5,614 were women, and 4,626 were men. Most women reported missing were under the age of 18.
64 percent of human trafficking victims in Hawaii identified as at least part Native Hawaiian.
The 10 states with the highest rates of American Indian/Alaska Native missing persons cases in 2025 were AK, AZ, OK, WA, NM, CA, MT, NC, SD, and TX.
95 percent of cases identified by the Urban Indian Health Institute had not been covered by the mainstream media.
Because of limited data, there is no reliable nationwide count of how many Native women go missing or are murdered each year.
