Sorry for the time between updates. The hardest thing about this hospital stay has been the lack of sleep. We’ve always said that caring for someone like Mason is similar to having a newborn, in that you only get to sleep when the baby sleeps. Well, the baby isn’t sleeping much! At some point, the lack of sleep starts to really take a toll on you, both physically and mentally.

As for Mason… we still have more questions than answers. Right now, they are taking a close look at his medications and making some adjustments to see if the meds were causing issues. I’m not sure if I mentioned in the last update, but Mason failed his swallow test with all liquids and solids, so he isn’t able to eat or drink anything. Some of his meds are only available in pill form, one of those meds being his main antipsychotic… yeah, probably not the best one to go without for 48 hours.

They placed an NG tube for nutrition the night before last but Mason ended up removing it himself and it has yet to be replaced. The plan was for him to go down for an MRI and THEN have the tube replaced, but we have been waiting for him to be picked up for the MRI for 13 hours now. So that means that he STILL isn’t getting the meds that he needs for mood stabilization.

I don’t see how any progress can be made until he can regularly receive his medications. I wish I had more information to share. Please continue to keep us in your prayers. This has really taken a toll on us and we have no idea how much longer we will be here. Cayde starts school soon so we have that hanging over our heads too. It just feels like too much all at once. Lord have mercy!

Another quick update before bed. After roughly 30 hours, Mason was transferred out of the ER hallway and into a private room. His labs look good, the CT was consistent with past CTs, his lungs are clear, and he seems to be doing a bit better today (he’s more himself). I understand that his seizure medicine may have been increased to a more “therapeutic” dose last night… but it’s far too soon to be drawing conclusions.

An EEG was performed today but the results are still pending. The EEG should be able to confirm or lay to rest the current running theory that there is some underlying seizure activity that is causing the decline that we are seeing, although I question whether or not upping the seizure medication BEFORE the EEG would mask the activity (if it were there previously).

This has been a VERY difficult hospital trip for us. We spent far too much time in an ER hallway and we are flat out whooped. Mandi got MAYBE 3 hours of sleep last night and I was able to take a 2 hour nap this afternoon. We found a hotel that is relatively close that also happens to be a good value (with the hospital rate applied), so we are thankful for that. I’m camping out in the hospital with Mason tonight and Mandi will be at the hotel. Depending on how much fun we have, I may elect to camp out with him again tomorrow night, unless Mandi decides to put her foot down on me trying to corner all the fun.

But, truly, this is HARD. I’m not sure that words could do justice to the immense suffering that we endure on a regular basis. It’s something that can only be understood after living it. We desperately need all the prayers we can get. We’re often complimented on our strength, but I can assure you that whatever strength we have comes only by the Grace of God. Please pray that He will continue to strengthen us and for healing for Mason. Our poor boy has suffered enough. 💔 ☦️

We wanted to provide a brief update for everyone that has taken the time to offer prayers and words of encouragement. It has been a long day in the ER and it still isn’t over. They are planning to admit Mason but that has yet to happen so it would appear that we will be spending the night in the ER hallway.

Thankfully, Mandi remembered to bring Mason’s eye mask so he is getting some much needed sleep right now. I somehow talked Mandi into going back to the hotel to get some rest and I will be pulling an all-nighter in the ER, keeping watch over Mason. I have an energy drink and my highly eclectic music collection to help me power through… what could go wrong? I’m already in the ER so I consider that to be a “compensating control”. 😃

At this time, the running theory is that Mason is experiencing a new type of seizure activity that we have mistakenly believed to be him “zoning” out. Once he is admitted, the Neurology team is planning to conduct an EEG to see if they can capture an seizure activity. I anticipate him being here for a couple of nights, if all goes well. Mandi will provide a more extensive update tomorrow, once she is up and about.

A big thank you to everyone that has liked, commented, and offered prayers. It means more than you might imagine.

Over the past couple of months, life for us has gotten increasingly difficult and worrisome with Mason. He has been struggling, and lately we have seen changes that we simply cannot ignore.

Justin and I grew increasingly concerned Saturday when Mason was unable to coordinate his swallow and was not controlling his secretions. It has also become more difficult to understand him when he is trying to communicate with us, and we have seen a noticeable loss of both trunk and head control.

We made the decision to stay home from Shining the Light so we could keep a close eye on him.🥺

We had already taken Mason to the ER in Tulsa twice over the past two weeks and left both times with zero answers. He has also been running fevers off and on with no explanation.

We spoke with his neurosurgeon Friday, and he told us that if we noticed any additional changes, we needed to bring Mason to OKC and they would meet us in the ER.

Yesterday, Justin and I brought Mason to Oklahoma City. We got a hotel for the night, knowing that Sundays are NOT the day to show up expecting to get many answers.

At this point, with the loss of his trunk and head control, transfers are sketchy at best, even with both Justin and me. We can no longer safely transfer him into the truck ourselves.😔

So this morning, we are heading to OU Main by ambulance from the hotel.

Please pray for Mason. Please pray for answers.🙏🏽

We are worried. We are confused. And we know our boy well enough to know that something has changed.❤️‍🩹

We need to figure out what is going on.

I will update everyone as I am able. 🤍🙏🏼

Lord, have mercy!☦️☦️☦️

I’ve been trying to find the words to explain what last weekend meant to us, and honestly, I still don’t know if words are enough.🥹

Mason’s graduation did not look the way we once imagined it would. Truthfully, there were moments over the last several weeks where it felt like yet another reminder that things are rarely easy for our family. I wanted every detail to be perfect. There were things I had planned that didn’t happen, things I wish could have been different, and that’s okay.😌

Because somehow, in the middle of all of it, God still made something beautiful out of something hurtful.

Instead of a traditional ceremony that ultimately did not feel meaningful or emotionally safe for Mason, we chose to create something that did. Something that celebrated HIM instead of simply checking a box. And seeing Mason up on the bridge at the park surrounded by his friends meant absolutely EVERYTHING to him and to us.

That moment alone was worth every ounce of stress, exhaustion, scrambling, and divide-and-conquer planning that these last couple of weeks demanded. Especially while I’m still trying to recover from knee surgery myself. 😂

Without our people, none of this would have happened. Truly.

The amount of family, friends, and community members who showed up for Mason was overwhelming in the best possible way. I do not think I will ever fully process what it meant to finally hug the necks of people who have been praying for and following Mason’s journey for nearly four years now. So many of you have carried us through some of the darkest moments of our lives, and getting to see your faces in person meant more to this momma’s heart than I can properly explain.

I keep saying I want to find a better way to share all of this. The good, the bad, the ugly, and all the little moments in between that somehow become the big moments. One or two posts here and there never seem to fully capture it all.

But this… this was all good.

We were able to take another hard and disappointing situation and turn it into something meaningful. Something joyful. It turned out better than I could have hoped for!🥰🥰🥰

Glory to God for always finding a way to lead us down a path that matters, even when it looks different than the one we originally planned. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I will be working on our “personal reveal” of Mason’s Make-a-wish over the next couple of days. We have taken the last week to try and fully grasp what a truly blessed “wish” this was. ☦️☦️☦️

Thank you to everyone that took the time out of their busy schedules to show up for Mason! He told me that night(his last one as a teenager) as I was kissing him good night ”That was actually fun!” ☺️
And, THAT said it all!🤍🤍🤍

After a lot of thought, prayer, conversation, and honesty, Mason has decided that he will not be attending the traditional graduation ceremony.

Truthfully, when we sat down and explained to him exactly what graduation would look like for him specifically, it no longer felt like a celebration to him. It felt isolating. It felt uncomfortable. And most importantly, it did not feel like something that honored everything he has fought through to reach this moment.

As his parents, we refuse to allow something that should be meaningful and joyful to become another painful reminder of all that has been lost. Feeling seen matters. Feeling included matters. And Mason deserves a graduation experience that leaves him feeling celebrated, not singled out.❤️‍🩹

So instead of forcing him into an experience, that was not going to be enjoyable for him AT ALL! We have decided to do what we have always tried to do throughout this journey…make something beautiful out of something hard.🥰

In Mason’s own words:
“God is in the business of making something good out of the bad, Mom.”🤍

And honestly, he’s right.🙏🏽

So on Friday, May 15th at 6:00 PM, we will be celebrating Mason our own way with a very short ceremonial graduation walk across the bridge at Skiatook Central Park.
Justin and I will present Mason with his diploma from “The School of Hard Knocks”😂, and then our not-so-little boy will get to throw his graduation cap as high as he wants to.🎓🎓🎓

It may only last 10 to 15 minutes, but it will be filled with love, dignity, joy, and people who truly see him.

If you would like to come support Mason, please do. I think it would mean a lot for him to physically see how many people still have his back after everything he has endured these past almost four years.

For those who cannot make it, we will either livestream it or share pictures and videos afterward.🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

And then the following day, May 16th, our graduate turns 20 years old AND his Make-a-Wish reveal! So between graduation and his birthday, and his CHAPEL we have plenty to celebrate.

Glory to God for all things.🙏🏽☦️🎓🤍

Glory to God! 🙏🏽🤍🙏🏽🤍🙏🏽🤍

Mason has asked me to share a post on his behalf, as he is currently off Facebook to ensure that the big Make-a-Wish reveal isn’t spoiled.

From Mason:

“Sooo I think I’m gonna get fully recovered when this prayer chapel from make a wish is built so I’m gonna need yall to pray for me”

We believe that all things are possible with God through our Lord, Jesus Christ. But we also trust in His Divine Will for Mason. This has been incredibly hard for me to share, as I want this so badly for him. Please pray for our boy. 🙏 ☦️
