โ˜€๏ธ ๐Ÿšจ URGENT HEAT STROKE WARNING FROM SLATON ANIMAL HOSPITAL ๐Ÿšจ We are set to hit triple digits tomorrow. In the words of Paris Hilton, "that's hot!"

โ˜€๏ธSummer temperatures can be deadly for our furry friends. Heat stroke can happen in minutes, and it is a true medical emergency!

๐Ÿ›‘ WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH FOR:
๐Ÿพ Heavy panting or struggling to breathe
๐Ÿพ Excessive drooling or thick, sticky saliva
๐Ÿพ Bright red, purple, or blue gums
๐Ÿพ Lethargy, weakness, or confusion
๐Ÿพ Vomiting or diarrhea
๐Ÿพ Collapse, dizziness, or seizures

๐ŸงŠ WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY:
If your pet is overheating, take these steps while you get them to Slaton Animal Hospital (or the emergency clinic):
1๏ธโƒฃ Move to AC: Get them into air conditioning or deep shade immediately.
2๏ธโƒฃ Cool Water: Apply cool (not freezing) water to their paws, belly, and neck.
3๏ธโƒฃ NO ICE: Do not use ice water or ice packs. This can shock their system and make it harder to cool down.
4๏ธโƒฃ Offer Water: Provide a small amount of fresh water to drink, but only if they are fully alert.
5๏ธโƒฃ Use a Fan: Point a fan at them to speed up evaporative cooling.

๐Ÿพ QUICK PREVENTION TIPS:
โ˜€๏ธ Never leave pets in a parked carโ€”not even for a quick errand!
โ˜€๏ธ Walk your dogs early in the morning or late in the evening when it is coolest.
โ˜€๏ธ Test the pavement with the back of your hand. If itโ€™s too hot for you, itโ€™s too hot for their paws!
โ˜€๏ธ Ensure outdoor pets have constant, deep shade and multiple bowls of fresh water.

PUBLIC HEALTH ANNOUNCEMENT:
"USDA Confirms First Case of New World Screwworm in a Dog in Lea County, New Mexico, Fourth Case in Texas
*The New Mexico case was previously errorneously reported in Andrews County, Texas"

๐ŸชฑWhat is screwworm?
From the CDC: "New World screwworm (NWS) is a fly that lays its eggs in open wounds and body openings such as the eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or ge****ls."

๐Ÿ„๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ™Why is this a big deal?
From the USDA: "NWS is a serious pest that threatens livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people. The larvae burrow into the living tissue of animals, causing severe wounds, animal suffering, and significant economic losses."

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ What do I do?
USDA urges everyone in the area to check animals for:
1. Draining or enlarging wounds
2. Maggots or egg masses
3. Signs of discomfort
4. Lesions in body openings (nose, ears, genitalia, umbilical area)
5. For pets, risk at this time is considered low unless travel to Mexico or near the border. Still, monitoring outdoor pets for open wounds, providing fly control, and using flea/tick preventatives such as Nexgard and Credelio which are on the FDA's list of effective drugs for the larval stages. We expect Bravecto to also have effectiveness as it is in the same drug class.

Anyone who suspects a screwworm infestation should immediately contact their veterinarian, state animal health official, or USDA. USDA has established this contact page to ensure everyone can easily find the correct contact information for these groups. In Texas, report suspected cases in livestock directly to TAHC officials by finding your closest area office here.
https://www.tahc.texas.gov/agency/contact.html

Though rare in people, anyone who notices a suspicious lesion should seek immediate medical care.
