💪 One lap. One move. One stronger you. Throughout August, we’re encouraging everyone who uses the Pathway to Wellness to pause at the Fitness Court and add a sit-to-stand to their walk. It’s a simple, beginner-friendly movement that can help strengthen the muscles you use every day to rise from a chair, climb stairs, maintain balance and keep moving with confidence.

The sit-to-stand is a beginner-friendly squat variation that builds strength while being easier on the body. Using the different surface heights available at the Fitness Court, you can adjust the movement to match your current fitness level.

In this demonstration by Ashley Behymer, SCMH Physical Therapist, you’ll learn how to:

• Position your feet about shoulder-width apart

• Engage your core and keep your chest lifted

• Drive through your legs and squeeze your glutes at the top

• Lower yourself slowly and with control

• Avoid the common mistake of “plopping” back onto the seat

Moving slowly on the way down helps strengthen and lengthen the muscles at the same time, making every repetition more effective.

Start where you are, choose a comfortable height, and focus on smooth, controlled movement. Small steps practiced consistently can build lasting strength.

Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning a new exercise program, especially if you have pain, balance concerns, or a medical condition.

For many patients, the laboratory is a uniquely personal part of their visit. It’s a chair, a tourniquet, and a few minutes with someone who’s either going to put you at ease — or not. Our team knows that difference is the whole job.

They also know what happens after you leave the chair. Checking an armband for the two-hundredth time that day with the same care they gave the first. Repeating a result that didn’t look right. Catching the value that doesn’t fit the patient. Redrawing a specimen because “close enough” isn’t a standard we keep.

Nearly 70% of medical decisions start with a lab result. Which means before a diagnosis is made, before treatment begins, before a family gets an answer, someone in our lab got it right and treated the patient well while doing it.

We’re hiring lab help. Here’s who thrives here:

🔬 People who are good with patients first — the nervous six-year-old, the 90-year-old with paper-thin veins, the oncology patient who’s been stuck a hundred times. Confidence without roughness.

🔬 People who stay alert inside routine work — who notice the one result out of a thousand that doesn’t belong.

🔬 People who can carry what they know. In a community this size, you’ll draw neighbors, classmates’ parents, folks from your own pew. Discretion isn’t a policy here. It’s character.

If that sounds like you, we’d like to talk.

We’re hiring an MLT, MLS/MT or Lab Assistant. Starting pay commensurate with experience and certifications. We are happy to train the right candidate. Apply online at scmhks.org/careers. Position open until filled. SCMH is an equal opportunity employer.

Accurate, dependable electronic health records help our care teams access the information they need to provide safe, timely and coordinated care for every patient. That is why the work of SCMH’s Cerner Super Users matters so much.

This dedicated team works together to test and validate software updates and new system functionality, helping ensure our electronic health record continues to operate accurately and effectively.

A big shoutout to Teresa Steers, Kate Garman, Lakin Lyon, Ashley Behymer, Maddy Koelsch, and, not pictured, Andrea Day, Laura Harris, Donna Winchell, Cassi Mick, Jeni Wallgren, Whitney Winder, Whitney Newell, Kristie Clancy, Katie Joy and Amy Kennedy for their important work behind the scenes!

At the annual Great Plains Health Alliance meeting, SCMH received the GOAT Award for completing system validation 100% of the time!

Thank you to our Super Users for your attention to detail, teamwork and commitment to excellent patient care. Great job, team!
