SECU Hospice House A PLACE OF COMPASSION, COMFORT AND DIGNITY

There’s a good chance that someone you know will need end-of-life care.

And if that someone is a loved one such as a parent or spouse, then you know how difficult it can be to make decisions, especially when you’re feeling distressed or overwhelmed. Hospice care focuses on palliative rather than curative treatments. Our goal is to reduce pain and suffering while helping the patient to live as fully as possible. The strain of caring for a loved one can be more than fam

ily caregivers can handle. That’s when a hospice inpatient center like the SECU Hospice House can assist. The SECU Hospice House opened in June of 2010 and is an 18-bed hospice care center for the terminally ill. It is located on Hospital Road a short distance from Johnston Health and is named for the State Employees Credit Union. We strive to make each patient’s stay as comfortable as possible for them and their families.

Help us keep our gardens filled with comfort, beauty, and a few feathered friends.

We're currently accepting birdseed donations for the birds that visit our grounds each day. These visitors often bring moments of peace, reflection, and connection with nature for those spending time at the SECU Hospice House.

Donations may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Thank you for helping us care for the little details that bring comfort to the families we serve.

This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. 🇺🇸

At the SECU Hospice House, we are especially grateful for the veteran volunteers who help provide “one final salute” to fellow veterans in our care through meaningful recognition ceremonies. Through shared experiences, compassion, and heartfelt gratitude, they help create moments of dignity and connection for patients and families alike.

Today, we remember those who gave their lives for our freedom and reflect with gratitude on the courage and service of all who have worn our nation’s uniform.

Honoring a loved one's birthday by giving back.

Tammy Wood, a longtime UNC Health Johnston team member, has brought horses to SECU Hospice House for years. Her husband was in our care this past year and shared that same love. Yesterday would have been his birthday, so the family came back, this time with Doc the mini horse, kitchen donations, and a first-timer: Otis, a mini donkey in therapy training owned by Tammy's daughter Emily and her veteran husband. It was Otis's first visit. One of our beloved guests, who spent his life raising horses, reached out his window to meet him and smiled the whole time. Staff did too.

Thank you, Tammy, Emily, and family. 💛

Celebrating National Volunteer Week 💛

Today, at the annual UNC Health Johnston Volunteer Appreciation celebration, we were honored to present our Hospice Angel Award to an incredible volunteer, Sandi Gregory (pictured right with volunteer coordinator Lesley Richmond).

This award recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to bring comfort, kindness, and unwavering support to our hospice patients, families, and staff, and Sandi embodies all of that and more! She is always willing to step in wherever she is needed, taking on additional projects with a positive attitude and a caring heart. She also helps guide and train new volunteers, offering her time, patience, and encouragement. Because of her, our team is stronger, and our mission continues to thrive.

Thank you to Sandi and all of our volunteers for your generosity and willingness to serve.

Did you know that each of the 18 patient rooms at the SECU Hospice House has a bird feeder?

Watching the birds brings a simple but meaningful sense of comfort and joy to our patients and their families during their time here. Our volunteers help keep the feeders stocked, ensuring those peaceful moments continue each day.

This weekend, we upgraded our feeders, replacing older ones with a more sturdy, uniform style that is easier to maintain and better enables us to care for this special part of the Hospice House experience.

Thank you to the team from Stevens Chapel Baptist Church that installed the new feeders around our grounds during their service day.

This project was made possible through donations to the Johnston Health Foundation Hospice Fund, supporting meaningful moments like these for our patients and families. We also want to thank DeWayne's for their support in obtaining the most beautiful bird feeders.
