Hamtown takes in afternoon Kitchen Fire in First Due district

At approximately 3:47 pm on 03 June 2026, Station 50, Station 60, Station 10, and Battalion 1 were alerted by dispatch to respond to a reported structure fire in the 18000 block of Muddy Cross Dr. Engine 51 with five volunteers along with Battalion 1 were first to arrive on scene where they found smoke emanating from the roofline of a single family dwelling. Your Smithfield firefighters, along with Carrollton VFD and Isle of Wight Fire Rescue members worked together to keep the fire confined to the kitchen and dining area of the home of origin with knockdown occurring within minutes of Engine 51s arrival. Primary and secondary searches proved negative, and crews spent approximately 1 hour overhauling the structure. Units were clear of the scene by 5:20 pm. No injuries to residents or first responders were reported.

Responding units: Batt 1, E51, E52, E53, M62, Rehab 60, L10, E10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Residential Structure Fire on Azalea Drive Quickly Brought Under Control

SMITHFIELD, Va. — At approximately 6:00 p.m. last night, the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported residential structure fire in the 200 block of Azalea Drive.

Assistant Chief 504, Captain 507, and Car 1 were already in the area and responded immediately. Upon arrival, crews encountered a one-story residence with heavy fire conditions on the exterior right side of the structure. Fire had begun extending rapidly into the attic space.

Engine 51 arrived on scene with a crew of four firefighters and initiated an aggressive fire attack. Crews were able to quickly knock down the exterior fire; however, the fire had already spread into the attic area.

Additional assistance was provided by the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department, Rushmere Volunteer Fire Department, and Isle of Wight County Fire Rescue, all of whom assisted Smithfield crews with suppression efforts on scene.

The fire was brought under control approximately 45 minutes after crews arrived. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There was one civilian transported for minor injuries and one firefighter transported for heat related reasons.

The department would also like to thank the Suffolk Fire & Rescue for providing station coverage during the incident.

Final units cleared the scene and returned to service around midnight.

Members trained on Forcible Entry, Search Tactics, vertical ventilation, Ladder Deployment, as well as boating operations as we are entering prime boating weather and water rescue time.

Good Weather Supports SVFD Drafting Ops on Route 10

Your SVFD Duty Crew was once again hard at work on Friday 3/27 prepping for Community Events and honing fire suppression skillsets to include static water supply operations. Members took advantage of the better weather to move some water using one of the local ponds on Route 10 located at the Isle of Wight Industrial Park. While crews staffed the South Church Street Quarters, Engine 53 with a crew of three exercised the engines’ ability to draft water from the a static source (pond) which is a tactic employed throughout the first due district where fire hydrants (with pressurized water) are not available. This tactic ensures we are able to supply fire scenes with adequate water to extinguish fires either through relay pumping or water shuttle operations. As the Engine Crew wrapped up their training, Station 50 was dispatched to a commercial fire alarm which was handled by Engine 53 and the other Smithfield Duty Crews.
