Today is International Clinical Trials Day

What Are Clinical Trials?
Clinical trials, also called clinical research studies, are how researchers and doctors test new investigational therapies for medical conditions.

Studies can't happen without the valuable time and effort provided by the people who volunteer to take part in the studies.

Clinical trials help answer important questions about investigational therapy such as: Is it safe? Are there side effects? Does it work?

Who Can Take Part in a Clinical Trial?
People living with a disease or medical condition are needed to take part in clinical trials. Healthy volunteers may also be required to examine the safety of new investigational therapy.

All studies have clear guidelines about who can take part. These guidelines are called the eligibility criteria.

A team of study doctors and nurses are there to support participants on their study journey.

Where Do Clinical Trials Take Place?
Clinical trials can take place in multiple countries across the globe, depending on patient populations and where medical conditions are most common.

Study visits can take place in many different settings worldwide: communities, hospital and doctor's clinics, research centers, over the phone or by video call

Did You Know?
The first clinical trial took place in 1747 and it was run by James Lind.

He worked as a ship's surgeon and wanted to find out about what was causing the disease called scurvy in sailors. While at sea, he discovered that oranges and lemons were important to prevent scurvy among the crew, which we now know are a rich source of Vitamin C.

International Clinical Trials Day is on May 20th each year because it marks the day James Lind's study began in 1747.

Why Do We Need Clinical Trials?
Understand more about medical conditions to find better treatments

Test if investigational therapies are safe and if they work

Make better treatments available for people living with medical conditions

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental health clinical trials are shaping the future of care—and they need diverse voices to truly make a difference.

Every breakthrough in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other conditions starts with research. Clinical trials help researchers understand what works, for whom, and why. Yet many studies still lack representation across different communities, backgrounds, and lived experiences.

If you’ve ever considered participating in a clinical trial, know this: your experience matters. By contributing, you’re not just helping advance science—you’re helping build a more inclusive and effective mental health system for everyone.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Reducing stigma and increasing awareness starts with us.

April is National Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, designated to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and foster understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Throughout the month, organizations like Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of America highlight the need for support, research, and acceptance for autistic individuals and their families.

Clinical research studies play a vital role in advancing our understanding of autism. 🧠💙

Through carefully designed studies, researchers can explore early detection, uncover underlying biological factors, and develop more effective, personalized interventions. These efforts help improve quality of life and support for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.

Participation in clinical research also gives individuals and families the opportunity to contribute to meaningful progress—shaping future therapies, services, and support systems.

Together, research and community involvement drive innovation, inclusion, and hope for a better future.
