Reflections on the Life of Vivian W. Evans
District Missionary Vivian Rae Wilson Evans, born August 27, 1950, in Smithfield, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on May 24, 2026.
Vivian was a devoted wife, mother, educator, missionary, mentor, and faithful servant of God whose life was defined by compassion, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to others. Vivian is preceded in death by her mother, Florence Estelle Wilson; father, Robert Wilson; sisters, Betty Langhorne, Barbara Johnson, and Janice Gwaltney; and brothers, James Wilson, Robert Wilson, and Walter Wilson.
She shared a loving marriage with her husband, Ernest B. Evans, and together they built a family grounded in faith, education, and service. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children, Myron Evans and Melissa Evans; daughter-in-law, Alison Evans; four grandchildren, Taz Evans, Ajira Baynard, Aydon Evans, and Aurora Evans; one great grandchild, Pharoah Evans; her surviving sister, Norma Wilson; and a large extended family of relatives, friends, church members, colleagues, former students, and Sorors whose lives she touched deeply.
Vivian was a high school graduate of Westside High School, in Smithfield, Va.; class of 1968. She went on to earn a Bachelor Degree of Science (Special Education/Elementary Education) from Norfolk State University, Norfolk, Va. She later earned her master’s degree in early childhood education from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va. As a lifelong advocate for children and education, Vivian devoted 41 years to teaching, specializing in Special Education where she poured patience, encouragement, and love into generations of students. She faithfully served for 13 years as the Director of Main Street Baptist Church Child Care Center, where she helped nurture and guide countless children and families within the community. Vivian was an advocate for Special Olympics. As the Special Olympics Coordinator for Surry County, Va, she supported several events to raise awareness and funding for children with special needs. Her passion and commitment for teaching was highlighted in 2002 as she was recognized as Teacher of the Year for Surry County Public Schools. She was also recognized as "Who's Who Among American Education". Vivian also acted as an advocate and advisor for the youth in Isle of Wight and Surry County, Va. For 10 years, she also was the Supervisor of the Summer Recreation Program for Isle of Wight Parks and Recreation.
Vivian's commitment to service extended far beyond the classroom. Her faith remained at the center of everything she did. In June of 2015, she was appointed as District Missionary of the New Covenant District at Mt. Tabor C.O.G.I.C. As District Missionary, Vivian ministered with grace, strength, and humility, inspiring countless people through her words, prayers, and example. As a lifelong member of Mt. Tabor with over 65 years, Vivian exemplified servant leadership and held several other roles including Trustee, Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Hospitality Committee, and many other auxiliary roles.
Vivian was a proud and devoted member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated for more than 50 years, exemplifying scholarship, sisterhood, and service throughout her lifetime. She was initiated into the Delta Epsilon Chapter in 1971 and was recognized as a life member in 2026. Vivian was one of the chartering members of Phi Chi Omega Chapter. She remained a faithful member of the Phi Chi Omega Chapter until her passing in 2026.
Those who knew Vivian will remember her nurturing spirit, elegant presence, steadfast faith, and the genuine love she showed to everyone she encountered. Her legacy lives on through the many lives she uplifted, taught, prayed for, and encouraged.

On Friday, May 29, viewing will be held from 4-7 pm at Mt. Tabor C.O.G.I.C, 13468 Waterworks Road, Smithfield, VA, 23430. AKA Ceremony will be observed from 3-4 pm. At 2 pm on Saturday, May 30, 2026, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at Main Street Baptist Church, 517 Main Street, Smithfield, VA 23430. Interment will follow the service in Mt Tabor COGIC Cemetery. Please keep the Wilson and Evans family in your prayers.
