Your child isn’t giving you a hard time.

They’re having a hard time.

When we stop viewing ADHD behaviors as character flaws and start seeing them as skill deficits, everything changes.

The most effective ADHD parenting isn’t about being stricter—it’s about building the supports the brain needs to succeed.

🧠 Save this for the next time you’re tempted to say, “You just need to try harder.”

When a child’s nervous system is constantly scanning for danger, everyday life can feel overwhelming.😩

A retained Moro Reflex is one piece of the puzzle I often evaluate when working with children who struggle with ADHD symptoms, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, emotional reactivity, and poor sleep.🥹

This doesn’t mean the reflex is the cause of every challenge.

But when the brain is stuck in a heightened state of alertness, learning, focus, and emotional regulation become much harder.
🫣
The question isn’t:

“Why is my child overreacting?”

It’s:

“Why does their nervous system feel unsafe right now?”

I used to think parenting meant giving instructions.📋

Then I met ADHD children.

Now it feels more like corporate negotiations.🫣

Me:
“It’s time to brush your teeth.”

Them:
“I’d like to circle back to that after discussing my concerns.”

ADHD children are often incredibly creative thinkers.

The downside?

They can generate 47 alternative plans in the time it takes you to say “bedtime.”

The upside?

That same flexibility is often linked to innovation, creativity, and problem-solving later in life.😊

Sometimes the trait driving you crazy today becomes a superpower tomorrow.

Not always.

But often enough that it’s worth remembering.

ADHD in girls often looks very different than the stereotype.🩷

Many become the “good girl.”

The helper.
The perfectionist.
The anxious one.

But underneath, they’re working twice as hard to keep up.🥹

If your daughter seems bright but overwhelmed, capable but inconsistent, confident one moment and falling apart the next, it may be worth looking deeper.

One of the hardest parts of parenting a child with ADHD isn’t the homework battles or forgotten backpacks.

It’s watching them struggle socially.

Many ADHD kids are funny, kind, creative, and incredibly caring—but impulsivity, emotional regulation challenges, and difficulty reading social cues can make friendships harder to build and maintain.

The good news?

Social skills can be taught.

The goal isn’t to change who they are.
It’s to help them understand the hidden rules of social interaction while protecting their self-esteem along the way.

💛 If you’ve ever watched your child come home feeling left out, you’re not alone.

Great review from Kyle... "Dr. Chiappino and the work that she does in Braincore Therapy is incredible. This form of therapy allowed us to treat our child without the use of medication, and the results far exceeded our expectations. In addition to the incredible work done by Dr. Keri, the staff in the office is extremely friendly and accommodating. I would HIGHLY recommend speaking to Dr. Keri if you or loved ones are dealing with any neurological issues."

What looks like laziness is often:

• Task paralysis
• Poor working memory
• Fear of failure
• Mental fatigue
• Difficulty knowing where to start

When a task feels too big, ADHD brains often hit the brakes.🧠

Not because they don’t care.

Because they don’t know how to begin.

Sometimes the most powerful question isn’t:

“Why haven’t you done it?”

It’s:

“What’s making this hard?”

ADHD parenting is saying:

“We’re leaving in five minutes.”

And somehow creating more confusion.😩

“My child forgets everything.”

I hear this from parents all the time.

But what if forgetting isn’t actually the problem?

For many kids with ADHD, “I forgot” is often a retrieval problem, not a learning problem.

The information made it into the brain.
The challenge is pulling it out at the right time.

That’s why your child can remember every Pokémon evolution, every YouTube fact, or exactly what happened at recess three months ago—but still forget their homework, water bottle, or the instructions you gave them 10 minutes ago.

ADHD impacts working memory and retrieval. The brain isn’t a filing cabinet. It’s more like a library with a librarian who occasionally wanders off.

Instead of assuming your child isn’t listening, try giving their brain retrieval supports:
🧠 Visual reminders
🧠 Checklists
🧠 Routines
🧠 External cues

Less “Why can’t you remember?”
More “How can I help your brain access the information?”

That small shift can change everything.

“If they knew better, they’d do better.”😊

I hear this all the time about impulsive kids.😩

But many ADHD children do know better.

The challenge isn’t knowledge.
It’s accessing that knowledge in the split second before they act.

That’s why consequences alone rarely improve impulsivity.

The skill your child needs isn’t more guilt.
It’s a stronger pause between thought and action.✅

When we shift from punishment to teaching, we help build the brain networks responsible for self-control.👍👍

And that’s where lasting change happens.

👇 Does your child struggle more with interrupting, emotional outbursts, or acting before thinking?

Let me say something controversial.

If consequences alone fixed ADHD…

ADHD wouldn’t exist.🫣

Most ADHD kids already know what they’re supposed to do.😊

The struggle isn’t knowledge.

It’s ex*****on.

As adults we often assume:

“If they understood the expectation, they’d do it.”

But executive function doesn’t work that way.

Planning.
Initiating.
Sequencing.
Following through.

Those are brain skills.

Not character traits.

The goal isn’t removing accountability.

The goal is creating enough support that accountability becomes possible.

Because no child has ever developed executive skills by repeatedly hearing:

“Why can’t you just do it?”
