Steps to Take if You Get the Flu

1. If you get very sick, are pregnant, or are 65 years or older, or are otherwise at high risk of flu-related complications, call your doctor. You might need antiviral drugs to treat flu.

2. Stay at home and rest.

3. Avoid close contact with well people in your house so you won’t make them sick.

4.Drink plenty of water and other clear liquids to prevent fluid loss (dehydration).

When caring for people who have the flu:

- Avoid being face to face with the sick person. If possible, it is best to spend the least amount of time in close contact with a sick person.

- When holding sick children, place their chin on your shoulder so they will not cough in your face.

- Wash your hands often and right way.

-If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

- Make sure to wash your hands after touching the sick person. Wash after handling their tissues or laundry.

Stop the spread of germs that can make you and others sick!

Influenza (flu) and other serious respiratory illnesses, like respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), whooping cough, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), are spread by cough, sneezing, or unclean hands.

To help stop the spread of germs:

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
Stay home when you are sick.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Practice other good health habits. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Get earplugs:"If your ears ring and feel hollow after a show, that means it hit your inner ear hard and harmed your hair cells," says Jackler. "Most people recover, but not everyone." At a loud event, even cheap foam plugs will help protect your ears. Custom-molded plugs from an audiologist are pricier, ranging from $75 to $250, but far more effective.

Check volume: Resist the urge to crank up the volume in your car with the windows down, or while wearing headphones on the street. Outside noise prompts you to turn up music dangerously high to drown out the ambient sound. (A simple way to monitor headphone volume? Take out one earbud and listen to how loud the music seems.)

Top 10 Health Tips for 2017

There is no one food, drink, pill, machine, or program that is the key to achieving optimal health. A person’s overall daily routine is what is most important. Consider these top 10 actions for working toward a healthier you in 2017.

1. Embrace nutrition basics. Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated. Forget the fad diets and adopt a healthy eating plan including a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

2. Move more. Aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, such as walking, each week to assist in weight maintenance and overall health.

3. Be smoke free. Make a plan for the challenges you will face and keep trying your best. Seek support and talk to your doctor about medications that can double your chances of quitting for good.

4. Schedule sleep. Make sleep a priority to enjoy a more focused, energy-filled lifestyle. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Create a relaxing bed-time routine and change your electronic device settings to the “night-shift” mode.

5. Prioritize preventive screenings. Many medical conditions can be recognized in the early stages by getting preventive screenings and immunizations. Ask your doctor about what screenings are recommended for you.

6. Connect with others. Building a community of people who can help you through life’s ups and downs is a vital step towards happiness and good health. Invest in relationships that provide encouragement and accountability to both parties.

7. Stress Less. Gratitude has been shown to lower stress, which prevents many other physical and mental consequences. Instead of focusing on what your body can’t do or how you wish your body looked, try expressing gratitude for where you are now and the opportunity to make improvements.

8. Work toward or maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, work toward losing 5-7% of your weight to significantly reduce your health risks. Studies show that individuals who track their intake using an app, lose more weight and keep it off compared to those who don’t track.

9. Set goals. General goals such as “exercise more” are not effective. A goal is Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timely. “I will walk 20 minutes over my lunch break on Tuesdays and Thursdays” is a goal.

10. Stay positive. Health goals don’t always go as planned. When you face challenges, focus on all of the positive changes you have made, no matter how small they seem. Treat yourself with kindness, like you would a good friend.

Eat foods with less fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol.
Take off the skin and fat from meat, poultry, and fish.
Eat food that has been broiled, baked, roasted, or poached instead of fried.
