Update on the winter sowing experience.
Ed created a heart shaped bed for these and transplanted them mid June. They’ve really established themselves I believe. No flowers yet but they’re thriving.

I tried winter sowing poppies this year. They germinated and I’m so excited to plant them out when ready. I love poppies. I started Oriental and Icelandic poppies. I do hope they come back and spread every year.

Our garden is looking good! We had such a late spring that nothing could be put out in the garden or in the green house until well into June. We’re in Zone 4 Alaska on the Kenai peninsula. This year, I spent winter starting flowers in my dining room to help combat the pests that love my peppers and eggplants. I saw videos on calendula as pest control. They’re the yellow and neon orange flowers you see throughout the outdoor beds and in the greenhouse. Today is July 18 and there’s not one aphid or white fly or thrip in sight. The calendula have very sticky stems and their scent is said to overpower the smells that the pests seek out from their favorite plants. I’m checking the calendula’s sticky stems for pests they’ve caught but still see none. Anyone doing this that have no pests? Or is it just not the best summer for pests? I’ll be repeating this next year to see what happens.
We’ve been harvesting and drying the chamomile and calendula for tea and plan on having it all winter long.

It’s coming along slowly. We had such a long cold spring, nothing could go out and had to sit and wait. It’s just now beginning to take off. I couldn’t have done it without my husband. Thank you Ed!
