Being diagnosed with a bulging disc, herniated disc, or degenerative disc disease can feel scary.

We see it all the time. Patients come in worried that their diagnosis means they’ll have to live with pain forever.

The good news? That’s often not the case.
While these conditions can be painful and frustrating, there are many conservative treatment options available.

Chiropractic care can help improve mobility, reduce irritation, support healing, and help you get back to living your life with less pain and more confidence.

Your diagnosis is just one piece of the puzzle. More importantly, we want to know how you’re feeling, how you’re moving, and how we can help you reach your goals.

If you’ve recently received a disc-related diagnosis, don’t lose hope. There may be more options available than you realize. 💙

Let’s talk about the different types of spine conditions:

Between each of your vertebrae are discs that act as shock absorbers. These disc can start to degenerate with aging, poor posture, repetitive stress, or injury.

🔹Normal disc: Healthy, hydrated, and provides cushion with optimal ability to absorb shock.

🔹Degenerated Disc: Disc dehydrates, losing flexibility, and flattens (less cushion)

🔹Bulging Disc: The soft inner material of the disc (nucleus pulposus) begins to push against the tough outer layer (annulus fibrosus).

🔹Herniated Disc: The soft inner material of the disc pushes through a tear in the outer layer.

🔹Thinning Disc: A more advanced stage of a degenerated disc.

🔹Disc Degeneration with Osteophyte formation: as the disc degenerates, the body develops bone spurs in an attempt to stabilize the weakened joint.

These conditions can lead to varying levels of pain, decreased mobility, or numbness and tingling in the extremities, while some people may not experience any symptoms at all.

Chiropractic care can be instrumental in the management of these conditions by providing pain relief, improved mobility, and education in proper exercises and pain management.

Just because it hurts there doesn’t mean the problem is there.

Pain can be surprisingly misleading.

❌ Shoulder pain may be related to the neck.
❌ Hip pain could be influenced by the lower back.
❌ Tingling or discomfort in the arms or legs may sometimes be connected to irritation elsewhere along a nerve pathway.

This is called referred pain—when pain is felt in a different area than its true source.

But here’s the important part: this doesn’t mean every ache, pain, or symptom in the arms or legs is coming from the spine. Sometimes the issue is exactly where you feel it, and targeted treatment to that area can be very effective.

The goal isn’t to assume where the problem is, it’s to assess the whole picture and identify what’s actually driving your symptoms.

Have you ever been surprised to learn the source of your pain wasn’t where you felt it? Let us know below! ⬇️

Don’t mistake temporary soreness for something negative. Sometimes it’s just your body adjusting to a new pattern, better movement, and positive change. Trust the process. But remember, never hesitate to talk with your chiropractor about anything you’re experiencing. Open communication helps ensure you’re getting the best care and support throughout your journey.

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is “should I use heat or ice?”. The answer may surprise you.

Ice has typically been used for acute injuries (brand new injury) to help in decreasing inflammation, swelling, and pain. Part of the problem is that inflammation isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s your bodies response to an injury and increases blood flow to the area to promote healing.

Dr. Gabe Mirkin originally created the term RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) in reference to the management of soft tissue injuries. He later revised this term, noting that prolonged rest and icing can actually delay the healing process.

Does this mean that ice is bad to use? No. Using ice for the first day of a new injury for pain and swelling management can be helpful. But it should be used sparingly. And part of the healing process should include gently mobility and gradual loading.

With the management of chronic pain and muscles soreness/stiffness the last thing we want to do is restrict blood flow and decrease tissue elasticity. Heat is very beneficial in helping with increasing mobility, which will help with decreasing pain and tension.
