When survival mode becomes your normal, you might not realize you’re still living in it. It’s because you adapt, keep going, and tell yourself “I’m managing this” while feeling like you’re constantly putting out one fire after another.
Survival mode can become so familiar you stop noticing how much energy it takes to get through the day. On some days, you might stop expecting to be able to fully relax. Other days, you might stop expecting to trust yourself without questioning every decision. Before you know it, you might stop expecting yourself to be fully present with your loved ones instead of your focus being on what might go wrong.
Survival mode asks you to always stay alert. But, being on guard all the time takes a toll. It quietly asks you to give up pieces of your life, little by little, until it starts to feel like the new normal. Of course you feel drained. You’ve been carrying the heavy load of your past trauma for so long. Surviving has been hard. Yet, the hardest part is that over time, surviving can start to feel like the only way to live.
But, what helped you survive isn’t necessarily what will help you live life in the here and now.
You don’t have to keep carrying the heavy load forever.
Trauma therapy is about helping you gently unpack the heavy load, step by step, knowing you’re not alone in this and are taking steps to no longer be haunted by it. You deserve a life that isn’t defined by your past. You deserve to move forward with a greater sense of peace, confidence, and feeling more in control.
