Do you feel confident with AAC?
I took one class in graduate school and it wasn't the best.
As a BCBA I had zero coursework in this area.

We wanted to change that at ABA Speech.
That is why I created AAC Mastery for SLPs and BCBAs.

Feel confident with AAC assessment, current research to practice, the importance of motor planning and so much more.

Most courses leave you with more questions than answers but this course is 10 hours of actionable content that you can start using today!

Nobody talks about how much leisure skills do for joint attention and social skills. 👀

When I teach a student to play Modified UNO or Memory, I’m not just killing time.

I’m building the exact skill base that makes communication possible.

Modified leisure skills = low-pressure, high-repetition opportunities to practice:

✅ Shared focus on an object
✅ Turn-taking with a partner
✅ Responding to someone else’s actions
✅ Staying in a shared activity — together

That’s joint attention. In a game. With zero flashcards and zero prep.

With over 20 years of experience in the field I want you to feel empowered to reach each and every student on your caseload.

We discuss these skills in our 1 hour course The Power of Joint Attention.

Comment CONNECTION below and I will send the information along.

And here’s the clinical piece SLPs often miss: when a student can sustain engagement in a simple play routine, you now have a vehicle for every other goal on their IEP.

Communication. Spontaneous language. Social reciprocity. It all starts here.

If you want to go deeper on the “why” behind this take our 1 hour recorded course, The Power of Joint Attention. It is in our CEU library in the ABA Speech CONNECTION.

We throw around “joint attention” like everyone knows what it means.

Do they? 👀

Joint attention = shared focus between two people on an object or event with both people aware they’re attending to the same thing.

It sounds simple. But it’s actually one of the most clinically significant skills you’ll target with young autistic learners.

Why? Because it’s the connection before communication.

Comment CONNECTION below and I will send along our Power of Joint Attention Course.

It is in our CEU library in the ABA Speech Connection.

1 hour of actionable tips and strategies you can use in your next therapy session.

With over 20 years of experience in the field, I am giving you easy no-prep activities for all ages!

Here’s why it matters for your caseload:
✅ Strong links to both receptive AND expressive language
✅ Predicts responsiveness to intervention
✅ Sets the stage for imitation, social learning, and long-term outcomes

If you’re unsure where to start with a student who is not yet speaking, ask yourself: Are they sharing a moment with me?

That’s your baseline. That’s your in.

Comment CONNECTION below and I will send along our Power of Joint Attention Course.

I’m raising a neurodivergent child, are you too?

ADHD and Autism share more than we used to think and the research is finally catching up. 🧠

A 2024 systematic review looked at ASD symptoms in people with a primary ADHD diagnosis, and the findings are ones every SLP and BCBA should know. Clinically significant ASD symptoms showed up in anywhere from 15–64% of ADHD samples. That’s not a rounding error. That’s a clinical reality a lot of us have been navigating for years without the research to back it up.

The DSM-5 changed the game by allowing dual diagnoses. But our assessments, our goal-writing, and our collaboration models haven’t always kept up.

Swipe through for what the research actually found — and what it means for the way we support our clients. 👆

Save this one. Share it with a colleague. And if you’ve ever worked with a client where the ADHD diagnosis felt incomplete, this might explain why.

When a student isn’t engaging in therapy, our first instinct is often to try MORE: more toys, more prompts, more activities.

But sometimes the answer is simpler: find their thing first. 🪞

I once spent weeks struggling to connect with a 9-year-old student. Nothing worked....

Then his mom mentioned he loved looking at himself in the mirror.

One light-up vanity mirror later? Total game changer.

That connection opened the door to everything else- including modified Connect Four, which he absolutely loved.

Here’s what the research (and 20+ years of working at the SLP + BCBA intersection) keeps telling me:

✅ Target developmental level,not age
✅ Be a play partner, not a play director
✅ Engagement is a first focus in therapy
✅ Modified games give all learners access to turn taking activities

Swipe through for a breakdown of play development stages, the research behind developmental matching, and 3 modified games you can use in sessions THIS week. 👆

Save this post so you have it when you need it.
