Healthy eating is important at every age. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. When deciding on a snack, choose options that are full of nutrients and limited in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Start with these tips:

1️⃣ Wash and Enjoy: Fresh fruit makes a great go-to snack when you are looking for a quick sweet treat. Apples, pears, grapes, and bananas are always easy and fast.

2️⃣ Stock your fridge: Keep cut up fruits and vegetables visible and within reach in the fridge for a convenient anytime snack.

3️⃣ Eat vibrant vegetables: Try raw vegetables with dips. Try dipping bell peppers, carrots, or cucumbers in hummus, guacamole, or a low-fat yogurt sauce.

4️⃣ Make it a combo: Use the food groups to build a satisfying snack: yogurt and berries, apple with nut butter, or whole-grain crackers with turkey and avocado.

5️⃣ Prep ahead: Portion snack foods into reusable containers when you get home from the store so they’re ready to grab-and-go.

6️⃣ Build your own: Make your own trail mix with unsalted nuts and add-ins such as seeds, dried fruit, plain popcorn, or a sprinkle of chocolate chips.

Children and teenagers who feel secure and supported by their family, school, and peers are less likely to bully. However, some youth do not have these types of support. Every individual is unique and there are many factors that can contribute to bullying behavior. A youth who bullies may experience one, several, or none of these contributing factors:

PEER FACTORS
👉to attain or maintain social power or to elevate their status in their peer group
👉to show their allegiance to and fit in with their peer group
👉to exclude others from their peer group, to show who is and is not part of the group
👉to control the behavior of their peers

FAMILY FACTORS
👉come from families where there is bullying, aggression, or violence at home
👉may have parents and caregivers that do not provide emotional support or communication
👉may have parents or caregivers who respond in an authoritarian or reactive way
👉may come from families where the adults are overly lenient or where there is low parental involvement in their lives

EMOTIONAL FACTORS
👉may have been bullied in the past or currently
👉have feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem, so they bully to make themselves feel more powerful
👉do not understand other’s emotions
👉don’t know how to control their emotions, so they take out their feelings on other people
👉may not have skills for handling social situations in healthy, positive ways

SCHOOL FACTORS
👉may be in schools where conduct problems and bullying are not properly addressed
👉may experience being excluded, not accepted, or stigmatized at school

Snacktime provides an excellent opportunity to support your baby’s learning and development. Talk to your baby at snacktime to help develop their listening and language skills.

Activity: Snack Talk (0-6 months)

Use: Snacktime

Description: When you're having a snack, talk with your child about what you're doing. "When I bite an apple, it makes a crunch sound. When you have teeth, you'll eat apples too." If they respond or reach for it and it is safe, let them touch it. "It feels smooth, doesn't it?"

Brainy Background: When you talk to your child, the part of their brain that processes sound lights up, helping them make sense of what they’re hearing. It also sparks the action part of their brain, which gets them ready to say words. Although they can't talk yet, this simple activity is helping them learn how to talk!

Do you ever have a hard time stopping a tantrum? 👀

👉🏽 It can be a challenge — once they’re in full meltdown mode, their brains literally can’t process logical suggestions or use coping skills!

Helping them manage their emotions (also called “co-regulating”) is so much easier if we can step in *before* their emotions boil over. Easier said than done, though! Before your child melts down, some early signs they might be dysregulated can include:

🚩 Fidgeting
🚩 Throwing toys or clutching toys in both hands
🚩 Hiccups or holding their breath
🚩 Stiffened body
🚩 Clenched jaw or fists
🚩 Covering ears or closing eyes
🚩 Excessive laughing or silliness
🚩 High-pitched voice or baby talk
🚩 Withdrawal/flat affect

If you notice any of these signs, it might be time to try a co-regulation strategy (check out our profile for lots of ideas!)

BUT, it’s also important to remember that YOU DON’T HAVE TO STOP EVERY TANTRUM!!!

Letting kids (and ourselves!) cry it out in a safe, comforting environment when we’re upset can have loads of surprising benefits:

💪🏽 It shows them that their emotions and natural response (crying) are healthy and acceptable
💪🏽 Releases pent-up frustrations, tension, and exhaustion
💪🏽 Scientists believe that crying literally rinses stress hormones out of our bodies, helping to restore emotional equilibrium

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) in water can affect people, animals, and our environment.

You can get sick if you go into, breathe in, or swallow the water. Animals can get sick or die, and cyanobacteria can reduce oxygen and block sunlight that plants need.

Fathers’ positive involvement can be beneficial for children of all ages across many areas of development.

Did you know? One reason father-child reading benefits young children’s language development is because it’s in-person and interactive. While older children can interact effectively with screens via Skype or video, infants and toddlers do not learn language from screen-based interactions the way they do with in-person interactions. Fathers (and other adults) can hold young children’s attention through gaze and gestures (like pointing to a book’s pictures) better in-person, which facilitates learning.

08/24/2026

At this age kids’ thinking has matured and they are more logical. They may still want to see death as something that is reversible, but they are beginning to understand that it is final.

School-age children tend to ask specific questions and have a desire for detail. They may also be concerned for how others are responding to the death. They want to know what the “right” way to respond is, and are beginning to have the ability to mourn and to understand and recognize mourning in others.

Despite their more logical thinking they may become overly fearful of sickness and injury because they don’t quite understand the mechanisms by which people die. Kids can also get fixated on why someone died, especially if it violates their logical principles of right and wrong. Under both of these circumstances try to help children develop an explanation for the death that makes sense to them. When they get older they can begin to understand the loss in a more sophisticated way.
