August 28th is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day - a special day to celebrate and honor all the pets we’ve loved and still feel beside us.

Our lives are made richer for sharing them with our furry family members. We will forever remember all of the love, memories and paw prints left on our hearts ❤️

This week we had the honor of celebrating Veterinary Assistant Week 2026!

Our stellar assistants are responsible for so much of what makes our hospital great! From patient care and comfort, procedure set-up and participation, laboratory sample processing, instrument sterilization and restocking and client communication, our assistants are constantly providing their support!

So on this week we strive to give a little extra care and attention to those that give so much of themselves to patients and people, alike!

To Jen, Nicola, Heather, Ingrid, Sophia, Juliana, Izzy, Anthony, Marisa and Giovanna - Thank you for all that you do! Thank you for making hard work feel a little bit lighter. And thank you for being you!

ATTENTION ALL SOMERS ANIMAL HOSPITAL CLIENTS:

Route 202 between Somers Middle School and Fireman’s Field is CLOSED and is projected to remain so through the end of August. Please allow extra time to accommodate for the posted detours throughout the surrounding areas.

“The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Route 202/Warren Street Culvert Replacement Project is scheduled to begin on Monday, July 13, 2026. They informed us that they have cleared their DEC issues regarding the project. They are working with the contractor on expediting the schedule in order finish the project before school opens! Route 202 will be closed between Firemen's Field and Somers Middle School and will remain closed until the work is completed. Through traffic will be detoured around the construction zone. Please follow all posted detour routes and traffic signage” - Town of Somers website

With the first heatwave of the Summer in full effect, we urge everyone to take extra precautions to ensure the health and safety of their furry family members!

Pets can easy overexert themselves in high temperature and humidity. Heat stroke is a fast-progressing, life-threatening, medical emergency that requires immediate intervention. But, with a little extra care and attention, we can mitigate risks for both humans and animals, alike!

Here are some strategies and information on beating the heat and staying safe this season! ☀️

Today is World Veterinary Day 🐾

This year’s theme is Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health

Far beyond “playing with puppies and kittens”, veterinary professionals aid in environmental protection, animal welfare, biosecurity, food safety, infectious disease control, as well as public health and education.

Per the World Veterinary Organization, “The 2026 theme recognises that global food systems are increasingly interconnected and exposed to emerging disease threats, climate-related pressures, antimicrobial resistance, and economic volatility. In this context, veterinarians act not only as animal health professionals, but as essential actors in health security, sustainable food systems, and economic resilience/sustainability.”

So, whether it’s the care of your pets at home, the safety of the food on your plates, the defense against emerging disease or healthy ecosystem support: veterinary professionals are true guardians of the galaxy! (Minus the space travel…for now) 🌎

Somers Animal Hospital will be CLOSED Friday 1/16 and Saturday 1/17 for ongoing construction work.

If you have need of an appointment, medication or supplies, we will be here per our usual hours through Thursday 1/15 and will reopen Monday 1/19 at 8AM.
