In many holistic health treatments, you are in a position to rest and digest. 😴 A gurgling or growling stomach often confirms that you are truly relaxed. It's nothing to be embarrassed about!

Plan for a light snack before your appointment if you're feeling hungry. Eating a heavy meal too close to your session can cause cramps, bloating, or discomfort when you lay on your stomach.

For the past 3 weeks or so, many of my clients get stuffy when they are laying on their stomachs. Since I’m now stuffy, I swapped out the “rooted” essential oils for OnGuard and Harvest Spice! I’m not sad, because this IS my favorite scent for fall….

Anyone else?

Is anyone else’s transition-from-summer-to school-mom-mind doing its thing?

This morning I woke up at 4am.

My dog decided that he wanted to switch rooms in the middle of the night.

So he barked … outside of said room that had the door closed.🤦‍♀️

After I got the boss of the house settled … I went back to bed and tried everything to fall back asleep.

Sleep sounds.
Breathing.
Grounding.

But none of it stood a chance ….

Because my mind had been just WAITING for me to wake up … just so it could start racing about all the things I have to think about during this last full week before school starts for the kids.

Important school dates I hadn’t written down yet.
New sports schedules.
Dentist appointments.
Supplies to still get.
My volunteer work to check off.
Healthy food I wanted to cook.
How I’d balance work to-do lists with memories I still want to make before they start next week.

With all that anxiety on my chest…
… I was never able to get back to sleep.

And my whole morning has been one filled with panic and overwhelm and worry and imbalance.

I tried to bury it all in cooking and planning and list checking.

But I decided to instead give myself a pause.

Because I know that underneath all of this?
Is just the emotion of it all.

The change coming.
The schedule more packed.
The kids away at school and sports more than they are home.
The worry if I’m going to be able to keep up.

It’s … a lot.

For all of us.

So can we all take a collective pause together… and renind ourselves today and in the coming ones…

Be easy on yourself.
And show yourself a little love.

Don’t just plow through this season trying to get to the other side.

Lean on your people.
Don’t skip your therapy (heck, add one if you need to)
Cry it out if you have to.

Give yourself some space.

Because you’re human.
We’re all… human.

Take care of you in this season.
And let’s take care of each other.

The Vagus Nerve …

🌿 The Vagus Nerve

Your Body’s Calm Button, Healing Highway & Lymph Partner

By Bianca Botha, CLT | RLD | MLDT & CDS
Lymphatica – Lymphatic Therapy & Body Detox Facility

What if one of the most powerful healing pathways in your body wasn’t a medication, a supplement or even a treatment…

…but a nerve?

Every heartbeat.

Every deep breath.

Every meal you digest.

Every moment your body shifts from survival into healing…

Your vagus nerve is quietly involved.

Yet despite its extraordinary influence over your health, most people have never heard of it.

Let’s change that.

🌿 Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

Have you ever experienced:

😮‍💨 A tight chest despite normal medical tests?

😣 A lump-in-the-throat sensation?

🫄 Bloating that seems to come and go?

😴 Puffy eyes when you wake up?

😰 Anxiety without a clear reason?

🫁 Shallow breathing?

🌊 Swelling that becomes worse during stressful periods?

😵 Brain fog or feeling “wired but exhausted?”

If so…

Before assuming something is “wrong” with you, it may be worth understanding one of the most fascinating communication networks in the human body.

Your vagus nerve.

🧠 What Is the Vagus Nerve?

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in your body.

Its name comes from the Latin word vagus, meaning “wandering,” because it travels through so many different organs.

It begins in the brainstem (medulla) before travelling through the:

🧠 Brain

⬇️

👄 Throat

⬇️

❤️ Heart

⬇️

🫁 Lungs

⬇️

🫄 Stomach

⬇️

🧫 Liver

⬇️

🌿 Small & Large Intestines

Along the way, it continuously sends information between your brain and your organs.

It is the primary nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system—the part responsible for helping your body shift from survival into restoration.

Think of it as your body’s:

✨ Rest & Digest system

✨ Heal & Repair system

✨ Calm & Restore system

🌿 What Happens When Your Vagus Nerve Is Functioning Well?

A healthy vagus nerve helps support many essential body functions.

It contributes to:

❤️ A steadier heart rhythm

🫁 Slower, deeper breathing

🫄 Better digestion and gut movement

🧠 Greater emotional regulation

😌 A calmer stress response

🦠 Balanced immune communication

🔥 Regulation of inflammatory responses

💧 Healthier conditions for lymphatic circulation

Rather than working in isolation, the vagus nerve helps coordinate communication between multiple systems throughout your body.

💧 How Does the Vagus Nerve Influence the Lymphatic System?

This is where things become truly fascinating.

Many people hear that the vagus nerve “improves lymph flow.”

The reality is even more interesting.

The vagus nerve does not directly pump lymph.

Instead, it supports several natural mechanisms that help lymph move efficiently.

These include:

🫁 Deep diaphragmatic breathing

Every deep breath creates pressure changes inside your chest that gently assist the movement of lymph through the thoracic duct—the body’s largest lymphatic vessel.

❤️ Healthy heart rate variability

A balanced nervous system supports healthy circulation, which works alongside lymphatic circulation.

🫄 Efficient digestion

Healthy gut movement helps reduce abdominal congestion, creating a better environment for normal lymphatic return.

😌 A calmer nervous system

When the body spends less time in chronic fight-or-flight mode, muscles relax, breathing deepens and inflammation becomes better regulated.

Together, these create conditions that support healthy lymphatic function.

In other words…

The vagus nerve doesn’t move lymph by itself.

It helps create the environment where your lymphatic system can do what it was beautifully designed to do.

🔥 The Vagus Nerve and Inflammation

One of the most exciting discoveries in modern medicine is something called the cholinergic anti-inflammatory reflex.

Through this pathway, the vagus nerve helps regulate communication between the nervous system and the immune system.

When functioning well, it helps prevent inflammatory responses from becoming excessive or prolonged.

This doesn’t “switch inflammation off.”

Inflammation is essential for healing.

Instead, the vagus nerve helps the body regulate inflammation appropriately.

This is one reason why chronic stress and chronic inflammation are so closely connected.

🌊 What Happens During Chronic Stress?

When your brain perceives danger—whether physical or emotional—it activates your sympathetic nervous system, often called the “fight-or-flight” response.

Your body prepares to survive.

Heart rate increases.

Breathing becomes faster and shallower.

Muscles tighten.

Digestion slows.

Stress hormones rise.

These changes are incredibly helpful during a genuine emergency.

The problem is when they remain switched on for weeks, months or even years.

Over time:

🫁 Breathing becomes shallow.

🫄 Digestion becomes sluggish.

🔥 Inflammatory signals may become more active.

💧 Your body’s natural lymphatic pumping mechanisms may become less efficient.

This may contribute to symptoms such as:

🌊 Puffiness

🦵 Swelling

🫄 Bloating

😵 Brain fog

😴 Fatigue

🤧 Sinus congestion

Again…

These symptoms are often multifactorial and can have many causes.

But your nervous system may be one important piece of the puzzle.

🌿 The Vagus Nerve Never Works Alone

Your body is not a collection of separate systems.

Everything communicates.

The vagus nerve constantly interacts with:

🧠 Your brain

❤️ Your heart

🫁 Your lungs

🫄 Your digestive system

🦠 Your immune system

🌿 Your gut microbiome

💧 Your lymphatic system

Healing is rarely about fixing one organ.

It is about restoring communication between them all.

🌿 Interactive Vagus Check-In

Take a moment to reflect.

Answer YES or NO.

1️⃣ Do you struggle to fully exhale?

2️⃣ Do you experience neck or jaw tension?

3️⃣ Do you become bloated easily?

4️⃣ Do you often wake up with puffy eyes or a swollen face?

5️⃣ Do you feel anxious without a clear reason?

6️⃣ Do you notice that slow breathing or prayer helps you feel calmer?

7️⃣ Do you feel exhausted but unable to fully relax at night?

8️⃣ Do stress and swelling often seem to appear together?

If you answered “yes” to several of these questions, it may be worth exploring ways to support your nervous system and discussing persistent symptoms with your healthcare professional.

The encouraging news?

Your nervous system is adaptable.

With consistent, gentle habits, many people notice meaningful improvements over time.

🌿 Six Gentle Ways to Support Your Vagus Nerve

1️⃣ Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing

Your number one tool.

Try this:

🫁 Inhale for 4 seconds

⏸ Hold for 2 seconds

😮‍💨 Exhale slowly for 6–8 seconds

The longer exhale encourages parasympathetic activity.

At the same time, deep diaphragmatic breathing creates gentle pressure changes within the chest that also support normal lymphatic return.

Five slow breaths can make a remarkable difference.

2️⃣ Humming, Singing or Gentle Chanting

The vagus nerve sends branches to the muscles of the voice box.

Gentle humming creates vibration in this area while naturally slowing your breathing.

Try:

🎶 Worship music

🎶 Humming

🎶 Singing

🎶 Soft chanting

Sometimes calm begins with a single breath… and a single note.

3️⃣ Splash Cool Water on Your Face

A brief cool splash over the face can activate the body’s natural diving reflex, helping slow the heart rate and encouraging a shift toward a calmer physiological state.

Simple.

Gentle.

Free.

4️⃣ Gargling

A strong gargle activates muscles supplied by branches of the vagus nerve.

Although it isn’t a diagnostic test, many people enjoy using it as a simple daily exercise.

Thirty seconds is enough.

5️⃣ Gentle Neck & Collarbone Care

The neck is home to important nerves, muscles and lymphatic pathways.

Gentle techniques such as:

🤍 Relaxing the jaw

🤍 Soft neck stretches

🤍 Light collarbone massage

🤍 Improving posture

may help reduce unnecessary muscle tension and encourage comfortable movement.

Always work gently and avoid painful pressure.

6️⃣ Prayer, Stillness & Safety

This may be my favourite.

The vagus nerve responds to cues of safety.

For many people, quiet prayer, worship, gratitude and peaceful stillness create an environment where breathing slows, muscles soften and the body begins to move away from survival mode.

Healing often begins where safety returns.

💚 A Final Thought

Your body was never designed to live in survival mode forever.

Every slow breath…

Every gentle walk…

Every quiet prayer…

Every moment of stillness…

Is a reminder to your nervous system that the danger has passed.

And when the nervous system begins to feel safe…

❤️ The heart finds its rhythm.

🫁 The breath deepens.

🫄 Digestion settles.

🔥 Inflammatory responses become better regulated.

💧 The lymphatic system is better supported in doing the remarkable work it was designed to do.

Healing is rarely one dramatic moment.

More often, it is thousands of tiny moments where your body quietly whispers:

“Thank you… I finally feel safe enough to heal.” 🌿💚
