The 25th anniversary of 9/11 brings feelings back to our community that resonate in unity and patriotism.

The words on the 9/11 memorial of the Roman poet Virgil “No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”

We have these commemorative stones available at no cost for anyone who would like a token of remembrance. We will be at the ceremony downtown tomorrow morning. I will bring some to the Somerville Elks as well as to our first responders at the Somerville Emergency Service Facility.

I remember being in Mr. Durland’s class at Somerville High School when the first plane hit. He kept the TV on as the world stopped for a period of time. I am thankful for a community who came together in the wake of tragedy. I later in my career was able to serve him when his mother passed away. The ability to give back to those who gave to me is one of the greatest gifts I have in this life.

We remember and honor those lives lost, those who responded at ground zero, and all the hero’s who continued to support their country through that time.

Made an upgrade to this page years in the making.

It is a privilege to announce that Edie Zagar is now Mortuary Practitioner NJ Lic. 5539 and will practice with Cusick Funeral Home & State Mortuary Service.

Edie took on a commitment to funeral service. This is not a job, but a calling to serve. Whether it is here in Somerville or at one of the firms we serve in embalming; she is committed to the deceased having dignity and their family being seen and served in their grief.

I spent the last seventeen years refining my practice. I still embark to grow and learn more as I evolve in my career. Having Edie as an apprentice showed me my strengths and where I need to refine. I look forward to working together and ever learning from our service and practice.

I am beyond proud to have her with us at Cusick and I look forward to offering our community another caring hand to hold during their season of grief.

We did it !

After years with French doors that didn’t serve us, we put in a more functional door.

This door serves as the primary exit for moving a casket out of the building, so having one that is not only wide enough, but waterproof and secure, was critical. It also brings more natural light into our viewing chapel!

We also updated the two windows by the bike table. The originals had been last upgraded in the 1940s and were in serious need of repair. I decided to replace them with energy-efficient windows that really open up the space.

Over the last five years, the commitment to renovation has reshaped an institution built to serve Somerville. I look forward to the years ahead as we update our concrete ramps, landscaping, and floors to name a few items on the list.

Thank you to our team at Cusick for overseeing this job while I was in Texas. I am only as good as the people around me, and I am truly blessed with an amazing team.

I am honored to be presenting in Texas at a conference this weekend.

While I am away, I leave my community in the hands of my apprentice and colleagues.

I will only be gone a few days, and in that time, we will be renovating the French doors in the funeral home chapel!

I look forward to doors that actually work and provide more light to that side of the room ! I will post pictures when I return.

For now, I hope to make my community proud and represent my skillset with compassion and dignity.
