Mindfulness is a buzz word we throw around.
We think just taking a breath is all we need.
It is so much deeper than that though.
It takes careful practice to settle the mind,
To slow the reactivity,
To notice our thoughts before we act on them.
The next time your mind starts racing,
Visualize a snow globe.
Count the snow flakes as they fall
Say nothing until you can slow your thoughts
Slow your breath.
You've got this.

Believing survivors helps reduce isolation, support healing, and open doors to safety and resources. It can be hard to know what to say or do when a survivor talks about their experience. Here are some phrases that show you believe them.

At Safe+Sound Somerset, we ALWAYS believe survivors. If you or someone you know has been impacted by violence, we are always here. Our helpline can be reached at 866-685-1122.

Every morning when you wake up, ask yourself this:

"If I had the best friend in the world, who was exactly like me, what would I tell her to do today so she felt loved?"

Would I tell her to skip breakfast and run on caffeine?
Would I tell her to ignore how exhausted she feels?
Would I tell her she doesn't deserve a break until everything on her list is done?
Would I talk to her the way I talk to myself?

Probably not.

I would remind her to eat something.
To take a breath.
To step outside.
To stop being so hard on herself.
To remember that she matters too.

So start doing those things for yourself.
Not because you suddenly learned how to love every part of yourself overnight.
But because you are practicing seeing yourself the way you see the people you love.
And eventually, the hope is that one day you don't have to ask yourself what you would do for someone else because of how much you have softened towards yourself.
