The Somerville Rescue Squad is a hybrid EMS organization with volunteer and career staff serving the Boro of Somerville while providing mutual aid to surrounding communities. We are hiring a per-diem EMT to join our team.

In just one week a new law goes into effect regarding the use of eBikes in NJ. Since 2021 municipalities in NJ and across the county have seen an exponential increase in both the number of eBikes on our streets and unfortunately the number of serious and even fatal injuries. Somerville has not been immune to these statistics. We have seen an increase in eBike use in town and have even had a few non-serious crashes.

Please be aware of an abide by the new law which goes into effect next week. For more information go to Somervillenj.org/e-bikes for more information. Above all else, please be safe and share the road!

The Somerville Rescue Squad is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Randy Mantooth, known the world over as Paramedic Johnny Gage on the revolutionary TV series EMERGENCY.

RIP Randy, thank you for elevating EMS. KMG356.

Randolph Mantooth, who played paramedic John Gage on the groundbreaking NBC series Emergency! from 1972 to 1979, died July 9, 2026, in Ventura, California. He was 80.

When Emergency! premiered, there were only a handful of paramedic units in all of North America. The show introduced millions of Americans to the very idea of emergency medical services, and Mantooth spent the rest of his life honoring that legacy as a spokesperson for the International Association of Firefighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs. In 2012, the Los Angeles County Fire Department named him and co-star Kevin Tighe Honorary Fire Chiefs. Generations of firefighters and paramedics have said Johnny Gage is the reason they chose the job.

A shout out to Akshara Arvind on achieving her GOLD AWARD with the Girl Scouts. Akshara's project was teaching and promoting (on social media) the value of Hands-Only CPR. This life-saving form of resuscitation is indicated for anyone who does not desire to take a full CPR course. Congratulations Akshara!
