Why is periodontitis a silent condition? Gum disease, even at an advanced stage, does not cause significant pain to patients.
This presents a challenge for dentists and periodontists. Patients don't experience acute pain, which prevents them from making a proactive office visit.
P. gingivalis, one of the most notorious periodontal pathobionts, is known to drive gum inflammation while limiting pain. P. gingivalis is one of the most studied microbes in the oral microbiome, yet little is understood about its evasion of pain signaling. Scientists from the ADA Forsyth Institute and Seoul National University – collaborating within the SNU-AFI Joint Research Center – explored this topic to make new discoveries and inform strategies for periodontal treatment.
In groundbreaking research published in Science Advances, SNU-AFI Joint Research Center scientists form a mechanistic explanation of how P. gingivalis silences pain receptors while advancing gum inflammation.
