When time is of the essence, you want an emergency department close by. For Laura Parker and her son Rogers, that became very real on a rainy February afternoon two years ago. Rogers was nine. He had been at a sleepover the night before and mentioned a sore shoulder when he got home. Laura assumed he had slept wrong or maybe pinched a nerve. The next afternoon, while putting away laundry, he said something unusual.

“My arm isn’t obeying me.”

After being brought in quickly, Dr. Tim Smith examined Rogers and saw that this was more than a sore shoulder. His left arm was weak. His gait was off. Something neurological was happening. “You don’t see nine-year olds who suddenly can’t use one side of their body,”

A Big Thank You to Rotary of Sonoma Valley for the grant that allowed us to purchase a new Tonometer for our Emergency Room. This vital piece of equipment measures interocular pressure and enables our physicians to quickly and safely assess eye injuries.
