In July of 1996, seven young athletes stood atop an Olympic podium, hands over hearts, singing. In later years, this “Magnificent Seven” as they were known, would say they recall every moment of that Olympic run. They remember arriving in Atlanta, the nerves, the excitement. They remember the crowds chanting “USA! USA!” before they’d even done a single event.

Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, and Kerri Strug came to the Olympic games as underdogs. They did not leave that way.

Miller set the stage first with a near flawless uneven bars routine. The other teens responded in kind, putting up numbers that challenged the defending champions: Russia. The Russians had held team gold sine 1952, and the United States had never once experienced that glory. Still, each U.S. athlete gave their best effort, keeping the score close. It eventually came down to Strug famously pushing herself to do her last vault while injured, landing her routine on one leg to give the Americans an edge. But was it enough?

When all was said and done. Russia had scored an astounding 388.404. The Americans? 389.225. This less-than-a-point of difference was all it took for the Magnificent Seven to claim gymnastics team gold for the first time in U.S. history.

30 years later, we look back on what these young women accomplished with wonder and hope. They have inspired countless gymnasts, and will continue to do so for decades to come. SGA salutes them, and invites any aspiring gymnasts to remember that greatness is always possible.

The 14-year-old girl standing in front of the uneven bars didn’t know she was about to make history. She was confident in her routine, calm, and focused. This was a sport she knew she excelled at, and as she began, spectators looked on in awe.

Nadia Comăneci was one to watch in the 1976 Olympics, and most people knew it. She flew, bounced, and spun off the bars in what seemed like a flawless routine, using moves that are deemed illegal nowadays for safety reasons. As she dismounted and stuck the landing, the crowd erupted in thunderous applause. But Nadia barely heard them.

She was already moving to another event in her head, already putting the bar routine behind her. That was the kind of athlete she was, but she later admitted that she knew at the time it had been a very good routine. She was so focused on what event she had to do next, she didn’t even look at the scoreboards. She was confident she’d get a 9.8 or 9.9, but when the crowd began to cheer again, she could tell something was different.

She looked up to find the scoreboards reading 1.0, rather than the 9.9 she’d been hoping for. She was puzzled, well aware that her routine had not been filled with errors or easy techniques. Quickly, it all became clear. The scoreboards were not built with enough space for a perfect 10.0 score, because one simply hadn’t been given out before. Nadia had just changed that.

Even then, the young athlete was thinking about her beam routine, not grasping yet that she was the first-ever Olympic gymnast to get a perfect 10. It wasn’t until much later that it hit her, but even then she’s quoted as saying, “You don’t compete to get a score, you compete with yourself to do a good job.” She took home gold that year in several events, to no one’s surprise, and enjoyed a fantastic career that lives on in gymnastics history.

We salute Nadia Comăneci, who did all this 50 years ago this week. May she continue to be an inspiration to little gymnasts everywhere, including our own at SGA!
