Mary Helen Thrift

Mary Helen Thrift, born October 5, 1954, in Columbia, Missouri, to Eugene Huntley Thrift and Nina Katherine Davis Thrift, passed away surrounded by the love of her family, friends and caregivers.

Mary was one of 10 children and graduated from David H. Hickman High School. Later in life, at the age of 60, she fulfilled a lifelong goal by earning her bachelor’s degree. Her determination, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit led her to found Nurture Spa Naturals, where she lovingly handcrafted goat’s milk soaps and candles that she sold in local stores and at farmers markets. Mary found joy in the simple and meaningful things in life. She loved being outdoors, spending time with family, and caring for animals. She was an encourager to others, always offering kindness, support, and a listening ear. Nature brought her great peace, and her gentle spirit touched the lives of many who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Sara DeWitt, and son-in-law, Andrew DeWitt; her beloved grandsons, Andrew DeWitt Jr. and Baylor DeWitt; her sisters, Dorothy Thrift and Barbara L. Boos; and her brother, Michael Thrift.

She was preceded in death by her father, Eugene H. Thrift; her mother, Nina K. Thrift; her brothers, Richard E. Thrift, Steven A. Thrift, Samuel R. Thrift and Allen K. Thrift; and her sisters, Nancy L. Bingham and Kathleen J. Blackburn.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, love, and support during this difficult time. A special thank you is extended to the compassionate staff of Treutlen County Health and Rehabilitation for the tremendous love and exceptional level of care they provided during Mary’s final months.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Treutlen County Health and Rehabilitation in memory of Mary Helen Thrift.

Rebecca “Becky” Herrington Ann Rawlins

Mrs. Rebecca “Becky” Ann Herrington Rawlins of Soperton died Tuesday, May 19, 2026 in Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia.

Mrs. Rawlins, 74, was the daughter of the late Osburn and Betty Ann Smith Herrington. She was born in Savannah, GA on August 8, 1951 and was a graduate of Savannah High School. She was a retired accountant/bookkeeper having worked for Minter Naval Stores with W. F. Belote, Haiseal Timber Company and Gillis Ag & Timber Company. She lived most of her life in Laurens and Treutlen Counties and was a Christian by faith. She was a free spirit, a nature lover and loved to do crafts and collect antiques. Her sister, Denise Herrington and brother, Ken Herrington preceded her in death.

Survivors include her two sons, Joseph Rawlins of Soperton and Trey Rawlins of Macon; sister, Cindy Cantrell of Savannah; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren, several nieces/nephews and the love of her life, her 40 year old African Gray Parrot “Elvis”.

A private service will be held by the family at a later date.

Eugene Arnold Coleman

Funeral services for Mr. Eugene Arnold Coleman of Adrian, GA will be held Friday, May 8, 2026 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Higgs Funeral Home in Soperton. Reverend Jack Stafford will officiate. Mr. Coleman died April 25, 2026 at his home.

Mr. Coleman, 60, was the son of the late Isaac McLendon and Marella White McLendon. He was born in Glenwood, GA on August 29, 1965 and attended school in Emanuel County. He was a former resident of Summertown and Norristown and had lived in Adrian for the past six years. Mr. Coleman was a carpenter by trade and was a member of the Norristown Revival Center.

Survivors include his daughter, Brandi (Joel) McDaniel; sister, Pamela (Steve) Anderson; three brothers, James (Bette) Paul, Stacy McLendon and Thaxton McLendon, Sr; aunt, Sybil Amerson; wife, Angie Powell Coleman; step-daughters, Stephanie Robertson, Rachel Driggers and Jamie Wilkerson; nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews, Sierra Anderson, Cameron Anderson, Hannah Paul, Jaycee Paul, Steven (Kayla) McLendon, Kevin (Jessi) McLendon, Caitlin (Dallas) Smith, Hayden McLendon, Thaxton (Crystal) McLendon, Terry McLendon and Chad (Adrian) McLendon.

The family will receive friends beginning at 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Tyrel Lamar Barfield

Graveside services for Mr. Tyrel Lamar Barfield of Soperton will be held Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 2:00 PM in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Treutlen County. The Reverend Keven Connell will officiate. Mr. Barfield died Monday, April 27, 2026.

Mr. Barfield, 39, was born in Dublin, GA on September 21, 1986 and was a lifelong resident of Treutlen County. He attended Treutlen High School and was a former employee of Mohawk Industries of Dublin. He later became the owner and operator of Tiny Burger of Soperton. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, working outside and he loved his son “Jasper” very much. Mr. Barfield was a Christian and attended Snowhill Church of God. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wanda Genelle Foskey and his aunt, Deneice Hanson.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Gore; son, Jasper Barfield: father, Quinton Barfield; grandmother, Wonnell Kight Foskey; brother, Mitchell (Ashley) Foskey; sister, Gabby Barfield; niece, Shae Foskey and three nephews, Mitchell Foskey Jr, Jayden Dixon and Bryce Dixon.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, April 29, 2026 from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Mary Ann McKenzie

Graveside services for Elizabeth Mary Ann McKenzie will be held Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 1:00 PM in Westview Cemetery in Soperton, GA. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 in the cemetery.

Elizabeth Mary Ann McKenzie was born September 23, 1988 in Austell, Ga to Laura A. Miller McKenzie and Condle D. McKenzie, Jr. Granddaughter of Condle D and Mary Kitchen McKenzie(Soperton Ga) and Richard W And Ann Ware Miller. From the very beginning, she brought light and purpose into our lives. She shared a close and meaningful bond with her younger brother, Brian. They were not just siblings, but true friends, growing up side by side, sharing laughter, adventures, and a deep connection that never wavered.

When Elizabeth was in second grade, our family moved to Indiana. It was there that her determination and talent began to shine in remarkable ways. She competed at the national level in track in Hershey, Pennsylvania, demonstrating not only her athletic ability but her drive to push herself beyond limits. At the same time, she developed a deep love for music, playing the cello with passion and dedication.Elizabeth graduated with high honors from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana in 2007. Her curiosity about the world and her love of learning guided her next steps. She went on to attend Purdue University, where she earned her degree in physics in 2011 a reflection of both her intellect and her desire to understand the universe at its deepest level.

Her journey continued when she was recruited to the University of Texas in Houston at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she earned her master’s degree in medical physics in 2013. This path was not just academic; it was purposeful. Elizabeth wanted to make a difference. She was hired by her first choice, Cedars-Sinai Hospital, where she quickly became a valued and respected member of the team. Her work mattered. Her contributions mattered. And in recognition of her excellence and potential, Cedars supported her in pursuing her doctorate at UCLA.

Though her doctoral journey was delayed by COVID, Elizabeth never lost her determination. She persevered with the same quiet strength that defined her entire life. Soon after achieving that milestone, she was diagnosed with cancer. Even then, Elizabeth approached her illness the same way she approached everything with courage, intelligence, and resolve. She worked alongside some of the brightest minds, not only as a patient, but as someone who deeply understood the science behind the fight. She never stopped hoping. She never stopped striving.

One of Elizabeth’s last words were, “I have so much more to accomplish.”

But what we hold onto today is not what was left undone. It is what she did accomplish: the lives she touched, the brilliance she shared, the strength she showed, and the love she gave so freely. Elizabeth’s life was one of purpose, resilience, and extraordinary grace. She showed us what it means to pursue knowledge, to overcome obstacles, and to keep moving forward even in the face of unimaginable challenges.

Today, we mourn the future she deserved. But even more, we honor the life she lived.

And it was a beautiful one.

John A. Bennett

John A. Bennett passed away at his home in Treutlen County on April 5, 2026. He was born in Savannah, GA on September 2, 1953 to the late Margie and Paul Mincey. He was adopted as a child by the late James and Johnny Bennett of Twin City, GA. He graduated from Emanuel County Institute after which he was drafted into the United States Army. After his military service, he settled down in Twin City and had a career as a millwright for Carpenter and Millwright Local 283 of Augusta. He retired after 27 years of service. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Alford Mincey and Bobby Bradham.

He is survived by his longtime partner Kathy Ussery of Soperton and also by his former wife and friend, Sylvia Sconyers. He is also survived by his two children, Matthew (Angelia) Bennett and Michelle (Justin) Edenfield, all of Twin City; three grandchildren, William Bennett, Margie Bennett and Seth Edenfield; brother, Larry Bowling of Arizona; three sisters, Letha (James) Hall of Canoochee, GA, Cynthia (Skip) Hayes of Atlanta, GA and Diane (Bob) Tanner of Virginia and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for close friends and family will be held Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Higgs Funeral Home in Soperton. The family will begin receiving friends at 6:00 PM at the funeral home.

Deborah Louise Hughes

Ms. Deborah Louise Stephens Hughes died Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at Glenwood Health/Rehab after an extended illness.

Ms. Hughes, 69, was the daughter of the late R. L. and Gladys Barnes Stephens. She was born in Dunwoody, GA on August 12, 1956, was a housewife and homemaker and later became an LPN. She was a former resident of Laurens County and later due to illness became a resident of Glenwood. She attended Faith Tabernacle Church in Treutlen County for several years and was a member of Cedar Grove Pentecostal Church. Ms. Deborah loved her family and all of her friends and everyone will miss her very much.

Her husband, Thomas Hughes, SR, preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Charles (Alicia) Gravitt, James (Melissa) McDaniel and Thomas (Stephanie) Hughes, JR; two daughters, Michelle (Nick) Knight and Rhonda Hardin; brothers, Chuck Stephens, Jeff Melpass and Benjamin McKinney; sisters, Vicki Bartholf, Sheila Summers, Barbara Buckley, Marrie Stevens, Elaine Mazych and Marie Bailey; sixteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Alma Brantley McDonald

Funeral services for Ms. Alma Brantley McDonald will be held Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Treutlen County with Reverend Marty Beacham officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Ms. McDonald died Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at her home.

Ms. McDonald, 88, was the daughter of the late Joseph T. and Curlie Powell Tyson. She was born in Waynesboro, GA on August 25, 1937 and attended school in Burke County. She was a resident of Adrian, GA until her marriage to Marcus Brantley in 1968 when she became a farmer’s wife and homemaker in Treutlen County. After his death in 1999, she was married to Mr. John C. McDonald until his death. She also worked at Soperton Manufacturing Company and was a founding member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her daughter, Angela Brantley Tanner; son, Allen Brantley and her seven brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Vickey (Wayne) Thomas of Rentz; son Steven (Dee) Brantley of Cedar Grove; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren and numerous nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews.

The family will receive friends beginning at Noon on Saturday at the church.
