When it comes to bodywork and massage—especially at a horse show—it’s crucial for providers to understand how much is needed and when it becomes too much.
Pre-show bodywork should support the horse, not leave them sore, tired, or overstimulated. The goal is to help the horse feel balanced, comfortable, and ready to perform—not to create unnecessary soreness right before they enter the ring.

Week two of the show 🥳—how are your horses feeling?
After a full week of schooling and competing on hard footing, standing on concrete, and sleeping in their stalls, are they still moving as freely and comfortably as they did at the beginning?
Are they lifting through their shoulders, supple through their necks and backs, rolling over their topline, and confidently picking up their leads? Or are you noticing stiffness, sore feet, discomfort through the suspensories, or tension traveling up through the body?
This is an important point in the show to address your horse’s comfort and performance with bodywork. Keeping them feeling loose and balanced can make a meaningful difference as they head into week two.

5 Signs Your Horse May Benefit from Bodywork

⭐️Regular bodywork also helps you keep track of the horse’s progress and any changes out of the ordinary that may come up to address them before they turn into something bigger ⭐️

Horses often communicate discomfort through subtle changes. Watch for:

🐴 Stiffness or resistance
Your horse feels less willing to move forward, engage, or transition.

🐴 Uneven movement or gait changes
Shortened steps, stiffness, or unevenness may indicate discomfort. Always rule out veterinary causes of lameness first.

🐴 Difficulty bending
Resistance through turns, circles, lateral work, or picking up a particular lead.

🐴 Changes in behaviour
Pinning ears, irritability, sensitivity to grooming, reluctance to be saddled, or unusual resistance.

🐴 Muscle tension or loss of topline
Tight, sore muscles—or visible muscle imbalance and atrophy—can affect comfort and performance.

Early support can make a big difference. Bodywork should complement, not replace, veterinary, farrier, and saddle-fitting care.
