Beginning a half marathon training program postpartum puts me at risk of developing shin splints, since I haven’t run for over 10 months. Here are my basic tips to minimize the risk of developing shin splits as I start increasing my mileage.

1) Avoiding back to back
running days
2) Cross training 1x/week
3) Warm up and stretching
4) Never running through pain
5) Strength training 4x/week

As a PT with almost 10 years of experience, these are my 5 daily must do’s.

Week 3 of trying to get my pull up strength back! Making steady progress. 💪

Had to do a treadmill run today since the air quality is so bad outside from the wild fires in Canada.

There is nothing worse than being half way through a run and having to stop because the baby starts crying. But my little girl must be rooting for me cause she woke up exactly 5 minutes after I hit stop, just enough time to also get in a stretch. My pace was 9:39 per mile for 3.5 miles. I am so impressed with my body and believe it was all the strength and cardio training I did prior to delivery that is helping me recover so fast.

So if you are in the thick of recovery, realize the work you put in will help you in the other side.

Stroller runs are no joke! But baby girl did not want to take her morning nap. No excuses to not get a run in and start my day off right 💪

Looks like my strength training is paying off! I have been super committed to getting by in my lats, biceps, and rhomboid strength at least 2-3 times per week. I am so close!!!

Perfect quick circuit to support a breastfeeding mom’s body. Back strengthening and chest opening are key exercises to include in your weekly routine! Unilateral aka one sided work is also important, as we tend to favor one side when holding our babies. Message me with any questions!

1) bent over row, use heavy weights!
2) y’s and t’s, focus on shoulder blade movement here
3) bent over flies, slight bend in elbow while focusing on squeezing shoulder blade.
3) pec stretch, all for 2 minute hold per side with 360 degree breaths

Did anyone else experience the postpartum plateau?

I’ve always been so self conscious about my body. I made a New Year’s resolution to myself to stop caring so much about the scale after baby came. Easier said than done right!? But I just keep reminding myself how proud I am that I’m still breast feeding and that is the most important thing in my current season of life.
