Early detection saves lives.

We are grateful to Mike and Dianne Denbrock and the 2nd Chance Foundation 4 Life for their generous $10,000 gift to Beacon Health Foundation. Created to provide hope, support, and second chances through health and wellness initiatives, the foundation's commitment to helping others aligns beautifully with this investment in our community.

Susan King, President of Beacon Health Foundation, recently met with Al McKellar, President of 2nd Chance Foundation 4 Life, and Greg Hughes, Vice President of Partnerships & Campus Relations at the University of Notre Dame, to discuss the shared vision for improving health outcomes across our region.

This gift will help expand access to mammogram screenings for individuals who might otherwise go without care and support the launch of prostate cancer screening awareness efforts, helping more people benefit from preventive care and early detection.

Thank you to the Denbrocks, 2nd Chance Foundation and the University of Notre Dame for their partnership and commitment to creating healthier communities.

🐾 It was a paws-itively wonderful day at Beacon Kalamazoo!

We recently hosted a Dog Days of Summer event celebrating our amazing therapy dog teams. Guests had the chance to meet some of our furry volunteers, talk with their handlers, learn more about our Pet Therapy Program and spin the wheel for fun prizes.

We’re grateful to our therapy dog teams for bringing comfort, encouragement and joy to our patients, families, visitors and associates every day!

As National Breastfeeding Awareness Month comes to a close, we're celebrating the many benefits breastfeeding offers moms and babies. The timing is fitting as both Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital were just named to Newsweek's Best Maternity Hospitals 2026 list.

Our Beacon lactation experts say breastfed babies have a lower risk of infection and fewer allergies. Moms who breastfeed can see lasting benefits, too, including lower risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and ovarian and breast cancers. These benefits can even extend after menopause.

Because breastfeeding isn't always easy, Beacon supports mom and baby together as a couplet. We work side by side with moms on bonding and feeding, including skin to skin contact shown to strengthen breastfeeding success. And to help parents prepare, Beacon offers both inpatient and virtual breastfeeding classes.

Ashley Schmidt boards horses and runs a hunting preserve and farm with her husband, all while raising four boys. So when back pain started slowing her down last year, it threatened her ability to keep up with it all.

Conservative treatment didn't bring the relief she needed. An MRI revealed a herniated disc and pinched nerve, and neurosurgeon Dr. Neal Patel at Beacon Medical Group North Central Neurosurgery South Bend recommended a minimally invasive procedure to fix it.

"Dr. Patel gave me my life back," Ashley said. "He helped me return to the goals that mattered most to me. Today, I can once again participate in the life I love."

The Oscar Mayer Wienermobile made a stop outside Beacon Children's Hospital and Memorial Hospital of South Bend this week during its visit to the area.

Three-year-old Zetti Perri got a front-row view from her hospital room window, watching the iconic hot dog on wheels just before her discharge. According to the "Hotdoggers" who drive the vehicle and serve as official brand ambassadors, the Wienermobile measures 60 hot dog lengths long and 24 hot dog lengths high.

What a fun surprise for one of our youngest patients on her way home.

Beacon Health Foundation is partnering with Camp Eberhart Alumni Association to help more local kids experience summer camp.

The Alumni Association launched the partnership with a $50,000 gift to establish the Camp Eberhart Alumni Association Scholarship Program, helping remove financial barriers for children of Beacon associates who want to attend YMCA Camp Eberhart in Three Rivers. The gift also funds first aid and medical supplies to help keep campers safe.

This partnership grew out of the Alumni Association's George A. Cooper Award to Three Rivers Health associate Abby Hostetler, honoring her heroism during the March tornado. Abby shielded a patient entering the hospital from flying debris.

"At Beacon, our mission is to deliver outstanding care, inspire health and connect with heart. This partnership brings that mission to life by investing in children and supporting the families of the associates who care for our patients every day," said Susan King, president of Beacon Health Foundation.

The partnership is especially meaningful to Alumni Association members, many of whom credit their own camp experiences with shaping the values and skills they carried into adulthood.

"The lessons learned at camp — confidence, character, friendship, leadership and service to others — stay with you for a lifetime," said Chris Sallows, president of Camp Eberhart Alumni Association.
