Finding an Easier Way to Enjoy Retirement

When Jim Halteman and his wife retired, they chose Holy Cross Village to make life a little easier and they’ve truly embraced everything our community has to offer!

From the amenities and activities to the friendships and opportunities to stay connected, Jim and his wife are making the most of their retirement and enjoying all that Holy Cross Village has to offer.

We’re so glad they chose to call Holy Cross Village home!

For Barbara Allega, life at Holy Cross Village can be summed up in two words: “easy living.” Not because she’s slowing down but because she has more time for the things that matter to her.

Barbara is an active volunteer with local nonprofits, including the Christ Child Society of South Bend, Indiana and she hand-makes teddy bears for children in our community. So far in 2026, she’s made 17 bears and she’s still going.

Barbara is a wonderful example of what retirement can look like when you have the freedom to spend your time with purpose.

Today, we celebrated a remarkable milestone as Holy Cross Village resident Simone Ostric turned 103!

Simone was born in Colombia, South America, to Swiss parents and returned to Switzerland as a baby. There, she met her husband, Anthony, who was originally from Croatia and studying in Switzerland. The couple moved to the United States in 1952 and came to our area in 1965 when Anthony began teaching at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN

Simone has celebrated her 100th, 101st, 102nd and now her 103rd birthday with us. Her daughters, son-in-law and friends joined her for today’s celebration, making this milestone even more special.

Please join us in wishing Simone a very happy 103rd birthday!

Giving back and supporting local nonprofits is an important part of life for our residents and a value shared throughout our entire community. Tonight, our culinary team showcased the skill, care and excellence they bring to our campus every day.
