Occasional body aches are a part of life. 🤷🏼‍♂️ So how do you know what’s normal and what’s not? 😕 We’ve listed a few common warning signs of orthopedic issues above—but those aren’t the only ones. Other symptoms of deeper problems can include:

• Unexplained pain that isn’t improved by rest or ice
• Difficulty performing normal daily activities
• Joints that “pop” or “catch” as you move
• Joint inflammation

If you’ve noticed any of these warning signs, don’t wait to see if the problem improves by itself. 🚫 The sooner you make an appointment with an orthopedic specialist, the sooner we can relieve your discomfort—and restore your movement. 🙌

Our community has a rich history of supporting Special Olympics. Some of you or your parents or grandparents may have volunteered at the 1987 International Special Olympics at Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s. The Observer reported that more than 4,700 athletes with special needs from 72 countries competed here, and last month Tim Shriver, chairman of Special Olympics, received the Laetare Medal on campus.

We’re proud to support our local St. Joseph County Special Olympics as the athletes prepare for the state competition June 12-14.

During the opening ceremonies in ‘87, Eunice Kennedy Shriver spoke these words at Notre Dame Stadium, “Tonight, in this great stadium, a new legend is born. You, athletes, are the heroes of that legend. Here, where crowds once cheered for Johnny Lujack and George Gipp: for Joe Theisman and Rocky Bleier, tonight they cheer for you. You are the stars and the world is watching you.”

We’re cheering for each of you!📣

Recently, we celebrated the hard work of our MRI and Spine Teams by going to a South Bend Cubs game together. Both teams have shown exceptional dedication to serving our patients. The MRI team worked many late-night hours to accommodate appointments while we upgraded our MRI. And, the Spine team has shown outstanding teamwork in patient care. They consistently go the extra mile to support each other and get patients in quickly when they are hurting. Cheers to all of our staff, and these two teams in particular! 🎉 🎉 🎉

Today, Dr. Balint, Dr. Bemenderfer, Dr. Flynn, Dr. Fuller, Dr. Kim, Dr. Kimmell, Dr. Losiniecki, Dr. Ratigan, Dr. Sieradzki, Dr. Warmoth and therapists George Myers and Kathleen Parker presented at our annual Worker’s Compensation Seminar. They educated nearly 200 nurse case managers, claims adjusters, attorneys and other leaders in the field of workers compensation about how the initial evaluation of injuries sets the tone for the management of the entire claims process.

Dr. Kim addressed rotator cuff tears, a common cause of shoulder pain. He noted that many people have rotator cuff tears without symptoms, and the presence of a tear alone does not necessarily require surgery.

Dr. Fuller explained that workers compensation cases are most effective when everyone involved works together toward the shared goal of restoring function and safely returning injured employees to productive work.

Dr. Bemenderfer emphasized that early recognition, appropriate treatment and clear communication prevent many acute injuries from becoming chronic problems. One of his strongest points was that delaying a specialist’s evaluation can increase both costs and the likelihood of surgery. Early detection and protection of injuries can often improve outcomes and reduce the need for operative treatment.
