Not Santa Claus!

Friends, in today’s Gospel (Matt 22:34-40), Jesus says that the whole law depends on love of God and love of neighbor. I want to reflect on the love of neighbor. For many, to love is equivalent to being a nice guy, or in Flannery O’Connor’s formulation, “having a heart of gold.” Now, there is nothing in the world wrong with being a nice guy or having a heart of gold, but you can easily achieve both of those states and not have love. For love is not really about fitting in and being friendly; it is willing the good of the other as other. It is wanting what is best for another person and then doing something about it. And this means that real love can be as tough as nails or as disagreeable as a slap in the face—indeed, in Dostoevsky’s phrase, something “harsh and dreadful.” Compelling an addict to get help or questioning a dysfunctional style of life both involve the willing of the good of the other—and neither will cause people to characterize you as a nice guy. This is why the God who is love is not a kindly Santa Claus who magically makes troubles disappear.

Monday 8/17- Day 18! I walked to St. Joseph's for Mass and prayer. The two office buildings that I needed to visit were across the street. Elizabeth Warren's office was locked and unlit. I will try to deliver her letter in Massachusetts, or I will mail it if needed. I walked to David's Tent, an amazing space of 24/7 prayer and worship in the middle of D.C. Each week of prayer is committed to a different state at David's Tent. Next week is Massachusetts! I made a smorgasbord lunch at my host's apartment. I took care of communications. I watched the sunset on the Wharf. I talked to my cousin on the phone and reflected on the trip a bit. I capitalized on all of her inquiries. I went to the grocery store. I finally quenched my craving for oatmeal. I am tapped back into the Miraculous Medal Novena said every Monday (since December 8, 1930!) Maybe I should stop at the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Philadelphia on my way home. Tomorrow is my final full day in Washington D.C. I look forward to seeing a few final sites and to begin drafting my letters to VP Vance and President Trump. I am soaking in every last moment of this amazing and unforgettable experience.
